In recent days, I encountered three different representatives of the cicadas (family Cicadidae) here in Tagaytay.
Cicadas not only reach astonishing sizes for insects (with some species having body lengths over ten centimeters and wingspans exceeding 20 cm), but they possess a bizarre, almost 'alien-like' beauty.
Male cicadas of the family Cicadidae can produce loud noises using their tymbals on both sides of the first abdominal segment, which consist of sound membranes set into vibration by muscles, with an underlying pair of air-filled sacs acting as a resonating chamber to amplify the sound. The sounds produced serve among other things to attract females and establish territory boundaries.
Remarkable features of these hemimetabolous insects, besides their ability to sing, is the long development period of their larvae: while the imagoes (adult cicadas) survive only a few months, the larval development usually spans about two to five years, with larvae of the genus Magicicada even being able to persist in the ground for up to 17 years before completing their development into imagoes.

In den letzten Tagen begegneten mir hier in Tagaytay gleich drei unterschiedliche Vertreter der Singzikaden (Familie Cicadidae).
Singzikaden erreichen nicht nur für Insekten erstaunliche Maße (so gibt es Arten mit über zehn Zentimetern Körperlänge und Flügelspannweiten von mehr als 20 cm), sondern sind von einer bizarren, fast 'alienhaft' anmutenden Schönheit.
Ihren Namen verdanken Singzikaden den bei männlichen Exemplaren der Lauterzeugung dienenden, beidseits am ersten Segment des Abdomens sitzenden Tymbalorganen, die aus von Muskeln in Schwingungen versetzbaren Schallmembranen bestehen, wobei ein darunter liegendes Paar luftgefüllter Säckchen als den Schall verstärkender Resonanzboden fungiert. Die dadurch erzeugten Töne dienen unter anderem der Anlockung der Weibchen und der Festsetzung von Reviergrenzen.
Bemerkenswert bei diesen hemimetabolen Insekten ist neben ihrem Singvermögen die lange Entwicklungsdauer ihrer Larven: Während die Imagines (die erwachsenen Zikaden) nur wenige Monate überleben, erstreckt sich die Entwicklung der Larven über eine Zeitspanne von meist ca. zwei bis fünf Jahren, wobei Larven der Gattung Magicicada gar bis zu 17 Jahre bis zum Abschluss ihrer Entwicklung zur Imago im Boden überdauern können.

Nice - bei Insekten bin ich skeptisch - biser ängslich aber solange sie auf dem Boden ncht die 100m schneller als ich oder Usain Bolt laufen kann ich mich damit anfreunden :-)
Dafür habe ich vollstes Verständnis - genauso geht's mir nämlich mit Menschen! :-)

Interessante und scharfe Bilder - vielen Dank fürs Zeigen! In den Blick bzw. Augenpartie/Gesicht (du merkst ich bin ein großer Insektenexperte😂) da könnte man echt was reininterpretieren. 🙃
Besonders schön finde ich, dass ihr die Kleine da auch so ranführt. Da gab es schon größere Tiere, wo ich mir dachte, was für ein mutiges Mädchen.

Ja, diese Zikaden sind zwar groß und wirken möglicherweise auf den ein oder anderen (@uwelang?) furchteinflößend, sind aber absolut friedlich und harmlos.
Ich bin froh darüber, dass meine Tochter Insekten und anderen Kleintieren gegenüber so aufgeschlossen und neugierig ist. Leider lernen viele andere Kinder von ihren Eltern auf Insekten und Co vor allem mit Abscheu und Aggression zu reagieren, statt von ihnen zu erfahren, wie viele faszinierende Eigenschaften sie haben.
Ich denke je nachdem wo auf der Welt sollte man schon wissen, was man mehr als einmal anfassen kann - gibt ja durchaus extrem giftige.😁 😉
Ja leider wird Kindern das oft falsch beigebracht. Sei es von erwachsenen oder anderen Kindern, die dann sagen das ist eklig und das fasst man nicht an. Oder dass es gleich erschlagen werden muss.
Und wenn Erwachsene zwar erklären wie spannend und nützlich Spinnen sind, dann merkt ein Kind sofort, dass der Erwachsene Spinnenphobiker beim ersten Anblick des Tieres massiv zusammen gezuckt ist und sich gerade sehr überwindet.
Aber ihr macht weiter so!

Yes, they are huge and look so bizarre but in my eyes also very fascinating and beautiful.
Excellent explanation for the process of the cicadas. What I find incredible is that their adult life is so short compared to their larval stage. Your work is very good, and we can always learn a little more about this wonderful world of insects.
