Since in a relatively short period of time I have once again come across an astonishing number of really fascinating insects as well as other arthropods and small animals, I decided to publish the 'second edition' of 'tagaytay' insects today.
Deutsch
The cicada Orientopsaltria fuliginosa is truly impressive in size and almost alien-like in its bizarreness. |
In this picture the long proboscis folded under the body is clearly visible. |
That's a much smaller cicada specimen now. | Hier ein deutlich kleineres Zikadenexemplar. |
This 'longhorn beetle' (family Cerambycidae) paid us a visit through the open bedroom window in the evening. The long antennae typical of this beetle family are clearly visible. |
Asian rhinoceros beetle species (Oryctes rhinoceros). | Asiatische Nashornkäferart (Oryctes rhinoceros). |
This big, massive, but completely harmless beetle belongs to the genus Leucopholis. |
'Click beetles' (family Elateridae) ... | 'Schnellkäfer' (Familie Elateridae) ... |
... have the ability to catapult themselves into the air while lying on their back with the help of a special jumping apparatus by pressing their head and abdomen to the ground at very high speed. |
'American cockroach' (Periplaneta americana). | 'Amerikanische Großschabe' (Periplaneta americana). |
Termite hills consist mainly of soil bound with saliva and are very solid. |
After removing the top layer (which I then carefully placed back on the mound), a complex system of passages and chambers appeared. However, most of the termites (infraorder Isoptera), which by the way belong to the same order as the cockroaches (Blattodea), disappeared too quickly, together with the eggs they had brought to safety, to be photographed in time. |
A rather large queen ant. | Eine ziemlich große Ameisenkönigin. |
While swimming, I suddenly had the feeling of being observed and then, on closer inspection, discovered an ant soldier patrolling the edge of the pool with truly impressive mandibles. |
The black queen gets a visitor. :) | Die schwarze Königin bekommt Besuch. :) |
This large 'robber fly' species of the Asilidae family had chosen the bathroom mirror as a resting place. |
With her strong legs, she tries to free herself from my grip. |
I came across this beautiful moth on one of my night walks. |
With this really very large spider, even I didn't dare to hold my finger next to it as a yardstick. :) |
Jumping spider (family Salticidae) with prey (genus Amata). | Springspinne (Familie Salticidae) mit Beute (Gattung Amata). |
As in my last insect post, also this time I present a few additional pictures of some small non-arthropods.
This time I managed to get a somewhat clearer photo of a 'large agate snail' (Lissachatina fulica). |
Completely unaffected by my appearance, this large toad simply remained sitting in the middle of the road. |
The 'banded bullfrog' (Kaloula pulchra) may seem comparatively inconspicuous, but this is not the case for its loud calls that echo through the sewers (see the following video). |
There are some scary details in there! However, I love seeing aspects that we don't normally observe with our own eyes. Crazy how some pictures can change one's perspective in a blink!
Oh, wow! Now that's a post. The army ant video is amazing. It's all amazing. The bullfrog sounds could put me to sleep at night. And the termite mound, they disappeared, "together with the eggs they had brought to safety". Busy, responsible little critters.
This is great, I have always liked to know arthropods from different parts of the world, so I have been very happy with all this excellent photographic compilation that you have shared @jaki01. Quite curious the photograph of the bee and chess, I think I was challenging you to a game 😄. Greetings from Venezuela.
I often see those in Tagaytay but never really appreciated them. Your photos and post made me see them in a new light 😀
Yes, you just have to take a closer look to recognize that insects are of an amazing beauty and have admirable skills.
Let them say what they want, but that little toad sure eats well over there 😁.
Quite a pro who even has photos that he's going to eat at Breakfast 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That's an exotic collection of insects you've shared. Some of them I'm seeing for the first time, especially the rhino beetle, all black and burnished. You must have taken some pains to have shots of all of them. Viewing them was good. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.
Haha, in general (but not always) I am careful enough to avoid that.

Thanks!
Yes, I am a former biologist and always was interested in insects.
That's really nice in case you learned something new.

amazing picture my friend.
