Never miss an opportunity, maybe luck is in it

This week, often circling in areas overgrown with greenery, or rather in habitats far from human settlements, this is intentionally done to get photos as well as see the development of wild habitats in the area itself. This activity I deliberately did to obtain data as a monthly report in a research.

I didn't find much in this area, because every greenery has been partially cleared for an agricultural program or people often refer to it as clearing new land, then cultivating a fruit crop by a group of farmers in our area.

Orthetrum sabina (Rhino Dragonfly)

Although some of the land has been cleared, some plant habitats are intentionally left by farmer groups, of course, they have a specific purpose.

This land clearing is carried out in a very polite way, namely cutting down or cleaning up wild plants that have grown and are seen brushing each land. Then automatically every insect species, both flying insects and several others, moves from the next location to the next location again.

Among the plant debris that has been cut down is piled on other land and the farmers plan not to burn it because it can affect the habitat in it.

The insect species that are often seen are dragonflies that are still in the same group, and what is seen here is the Rhinoceros Dragonfly or people often refer to it as the swamp green eagle.

In our area, as well as other areas that are still within the territory of Indonesia, it is very easy to get it in the sense that it is still in pleasant numbers or counts.

Of course, their development, which is still in this quite a lot category, depends on the influence of habitat in an area. The reason dragonflies often breed here must have certain reasons, including :

1 Have natural water

If someone asks why in this area, green plants are often overgrown and their growth is very fast and fertile, then the answer is, the influence of the nutrients possessed by the soil itself, then of course with the influence of adequate water then the capacity is also good.

Having good nutrients for the soil, of course, is influenced by the water and air in this area, when this area has intermittent water flow, coupled with good water capacity, the dragonfly group will automatically come and choose that location as a nest.

So, when an area has clean puddles of water or is free from pollution from a waste, the dragonflies themselves first detect a situation, then their group automatically attends because that is the area they are looking for, then what for?

If you look at the behavior of each parent dragonfly when they want to lay eggs, what they are looking for is a water-shaped nest, of course later the mother dragonfly will lay eggs in clean puddles. Thus, based on the behavior of its parent, the dragonfly is one of the species that detects clean water free of pollution or often referred to as a natural bio-indicator or a tool, making it easier for humans to know it in detecting parts of water that are free from waste or other digestion.

So don't be surprised, why dragonfly has become a nickname for detecting clean water in a habitat found in the human or other environment.

2 For what, the mother dragonfly chooses clean water as its nest

As we both know, that the way dragonflies develop is not the same as other insect species, for example grasshoppers, butterflies, and other species that fall into their category, will use leaves as breeding objects for their children. Meanwhile, dragonflies will lay their eggs in clean water as the location for their children to be born and grow up in it at a certain time or period.

When the mother dragonfly feels it will give birth to her eggs, she will look for water (as mentioned above), the mother dragonfly will lay her eggs on leaves that are located above the water surface.

Myself and a local team have seen that in 2021, dragonfly eggs that are around the leaf surface above the water surface, look long and round. Uniquely, at the end of the egg there is a hole which is a congenital egg cell and is very useful for entering sperm from the male capit (lay term). In this case, it turns out that the dragonfly eggs will also be fertilized before laying eggs by the female.

Within 1-3 weeks, the eggs will drip and will become small larvae's that are ready to prey on mosquito larvae in the waters or areas chosen by the mother.

1 Likes to be high up in a foliage habitat located near a puddle of choice

The photos you see above or below show a parent dragonfly that is often in a green habitat area, but is still close to a small river, which has the potential for clean water. Its existence on the branches of the wild trees, of course, has a purpose!

why...

Many things they do, when standing on one of the wooden branches, among others are:

a Monitoring something

By the way, then therein lies their power when on the surface of a wooden branch or in any high location. I myself really like seeing the pose, because it looks very stunning and extraordinary. As previously explained, their presence in this location is an effort in their daily lives, from the many activities they do, including monitoring every prey seen in front of them.

Having a sharp eye in every observation when standing on the surface of a wooden branch, becomes their luck in hunting every prey, and this situation makes them succeed in capturing the target, meaning that when they are at that location, they estimate the size of the victim's distance, the measure of success, and the size of the victim's escape when trying to escape to avoid an attack, generally this is done for other insect species such as wasps and some other flying insects.

Amazingly, when they focus on estimating the victim's distance, they can still predict the movement of other objects, such as our whereabouts when they are about to approach them, so at that time they will avoid our every move if someone tries to catch them.

This pose reminds us of the eagle's character when it comes to aiming at an opponent or victim. So this technique, often successful in living it.

It looks quiet and cold, but this attitude is very worried by the victim. Supported by agility in maneuvering, this prowess can silence or turn off the opponent's steps when in the air or when the victim is busy doing daily activities.

Supported by, strong jaws, and sharp mouth in cutting, then in an instant a dragonfly is able to mutilate victims in the air or while performing surgery. Every victim's body that has been obtained, the victim is no longer able to escape.

It is this agility and kegesitan that makes their success in reaching a body that has been monitored since their existence on the surface of a wooden branch or other.

One more thing that impressed me about dragonflies is that they are able to avoid other predators, either from other animal species or when they are attacked and able to attack, when they catch their victims. However, the prey attached to its jaw does not come off, so it cannot be controlled by the intruder.

The advantage is that every part of the dragonfly's body always has a sense of alertness or instinct that comes from conditional nerves, even though the detection senses shadows or the movement of other small objects.

Having a light body, and armed with broad wings or having a size larger than its body, it is an absolute right for dragonflies to be free to do anything when they are above the air in hunting or other activities.

The wings look transparent but are very sturdy and strong, it is said to be strong, when a human hand grips the two wings, the wings attached to his body will not come off, even though he is dead but the wings and athletic body are still formed and not damaged.

When I saw this character, and when I saw the conversation above, I myself made sure that the dragonfly was not only agile in flight, not only great at hunting, but he was very intelligent in understanding the conditions surrounding his activities.

If examined, the dragonfly does not have a brain like humans, but it has a body component that has instincts or instincts (follow the flow) that are accurate in responding to a situation.

So it's no wonder why dragonflies still survive even today, even though their existence has existed for a very long time, this is because they are successful thanks to their favorable body conditions and also their agile instinctual intelligence.

However, they also have some weaknesses that make them sink or become easy prey by every predator in their environment, so what's the story?

So in this case, it will be presented again in the next post... Thank you for reading this article. Good luck to all of you here at Hive.blog.
