Axie Origin Builds #1: Bruiser Plant

what to buy for origin.jpg

Axie Origin is coming out any day now! It is time to theorycraft and decide what Axies we want to play with on day one of battles v3.

This is the first of a few posts I'm going to do in the coming days explaining great Axie builds that you can buy for under 0.03 ETH which might be strong in the new Axie game mode. Of course is this only based on my best understanding, but it is all speculative until the game is playable.

Please consider all Axie spending to be entertainment spending. This is seriously not financial advice

Principles for Buying Axies for Origin Battles v3

Look for Good Deals

At this time you want to find Axies that have reasonable movesets at low prices. I beleive this is the most cost-effective way to stock up for Axie Origins, because most likely we are going to get a lot of this stuff wrong. Some of our ideas about what will be strong in v3 will simply not work out.

We don't know what many keywords do, and some cards -- like strawberry -- are still a complete mystery, we don't know what they will actually do.

WEN strawberry?

That's why imo the best idea is to not try and find galaxy-brain level strategies. Instead, buy reasonable Axies that might be good enough to get some wins on day one. Then, as we learn, we can sharpen our ideas and work towards more specific builds.

It'also why I am mostly filtering for Axies with 0 breed cost right now -- I want to be able to breed new options as the season 0 meta reveals itself.

Simple Synergies

Like I said, I don't want to find galaxy-brain strategies because they will likely be wrong and I am dumb anyway. I want to find robust, relatively safe movesets that have clear synergies.

Give me a small easy synergy over a strong complicated one, at least in this early speculative theorycrafting phase.

Pure Axies probably best

Axie Infinity Classic v2 is full of strong "chop suey" Axie builds now that blend classes together. This is the result of over a year of theorycrafting, balance adjusting, and breeding.

For the beginning of Axie Infinity Origin v3 it is likely that pure Axies will be much easier to win with in the early days. Over time, I am sure that chop suey will emerge. But, for now, it seems likely that pure Axies are the safest place to start.

Don't get me wrong I am keeping my current chop-suey Axies and will be testing them when Origin drops. But I don't plan to buy any more chop suey right now.

What is Bruiser Plant?

A bruiser is a creature in a game that has high defense while also dealing some good damage. These creatures can absorb a lot of opposing attacks and give you time to build up middle and backline Axies.

Since pure plants are relatively cheap, there are some very affordable movesets for Origin right now that combine strong heals with a few big damage attacks.

IMO having some offense on a defensive build is usually better than pure defense. There's a reason that cards like Fish Snack and Sticky Goo get played more often than Red Ear in Axie classic.

Here's some examples of Bruiser Plants.

Example #1 bruiser plant 1b.png

Price (as of writing): 0.011 ETH

This build has a great blend of offense and defense. Both Zigzag and Watermelon offer healing and attacking together, and then Pumpkin gives you some card cycling with big defense. We will have to see if Clover is any good, that card is still a mystery.

Example #2

Price (as of writing): 0.012 ETH

This build is more heal oriented with Rose Bud being a strong self-healing move. Herbivore also allows for self-healing while also dealing 65 damage -- seems strong!

How to search the marketplace for this build

The filter for this build is fairly complicated since the plant cards vary a lot.

Here's how I search.

(1) Set purity to 6
(2) Set Breed Count to 0
(3) Filter for the following moves: Beech, Bidens, Blossom, Carrot, Cattail, Confused, Cucumber Slice, Hatsune, Herbivore, Hot Butt, Lotus, Mint, Papi, Pumpkin, Rosa, Rose Bud, Sakura, Silence Whisper, Turnip, Watering Can, Watermelon, Zigzag. Optional: Clover, Hollow, Shiitake

That's it! There are a lot of plants under 0.02 that will pop up with this filter. Not all the movesets look viable, so make sure to pay attention and look for builds that have both good defense and offense.

Origin Coming Soon

Origin drops any day now, so I'm excited to continue theorycrafting. Not every idea is going to pan out, but putting in a real effort to understand this game and build good team will pay off a lot in the early seasons... There is no reason to wait until other people figure it out for us.

Let's build.
