Todos navegamos un mar infinito, ese que denominamos aprendizaje, pero no todo navegamos al mismo ritmo, ni con las mismas condiciones, algunos lo hacemos con velas de talento extraordinario, mientras que otros surcamos olas de dificultades inesperadas.
Sin embargo, en este mar infinito, también están aquellos a quienes se les considera con doble excepcionalidad, aquellos que poseen un alto coeficiente intelectual junto con una condición que les presenta dificultades en el aprendizaje.
En el artículo de Margarita Rodríguez títulado: "Doble excepcionalidad", la paradoja de tener una alta capacidad intelectual y al mismo tiempo una inusual dificultad, se indica que las personas con estas realidades son aquellas que:
“demuestran un potencial de alto rendimiento o productividad creativa en uno o más dominios tales como las matemáticas, la ciencia, la tecnología, las artes, lo visual, espacial, o las artes escénicas o en otras áreas de la productividad humana, y que manifiestan una o más discapacidades”.
Significa entonces, que las personas con Doble excepcionalidad pueden presentar un alto rendimiento en áreas como la lógica, la matemática o el lenguaje, mientras que al mismo tiempo experimentan dificultades en la atención, la escritura o la interacción social. Por lo cual pueden ser ávidos lectores, capaces de devorar libros complejos, pero a la vez batallar con la escritura. Algunos poseen una mente matemática prodigiosa, pero se frustran al no poder seguir instrucciones orales. Su excepcionalidad se convierte en un paisaje de contrastes, donde la brillantez se entremezcla con la confusión y la frustración.
De allí que este inmenso mar pueda lograr que se invisibilicen sus necesidades. Su inteligencia puede enmascarar sus dificultades, llevando a diagnósticos tardíos o erróneos. Siendo etiquetados como "perezosos", "desmotivados" o "disruptivos", sin comprender la complejidad de su iceberg interior.
Por lo tanto, los maestros y las familias son el pilar fundamental para brindar un ambiente de apoyo incondicional, comprender sus necesidades y servir de ancla cuando el mar ofrezca peligros o anclas que les garanticen seguridad.
La doble excepcionalidad no define. En un mar en el que todos navegamos, quienes poseen doble excepcionalidad, son seres llenos de potencial, con sueños y anhelos como cualquier otro, quienes con el apoyo adecuado, pueden desarrollar sus talentos al máximo y navegar hacia un futuro brillante, sin olas que los detengan, siendo tu trabajo y el mío ayudar para que eso suceda.

We all sail an infinite sea, the one we call learning, but we do not all sail at the same pace, nor with the same conditions, some do it with sails of extraordinary talent, while others surf waves of unexpected difficulties.
However, in this infinite sea, there are also those who are considered to be doubly exceptional, those who possess a high IQ together with a condition that presents them with learning difficulties.

Some possess a prodigious mathematical mind, but become frustrated at not being able to follow oral instructions. Their exceptionality becomes a landscape of contrasts, where brilliance intermingles with confusion and frustration.
Hence, this immense sea can make their needs invisible. Their intelligence can mask their difficulties, leading to late or erroneous diagnoses. They are labeled as "lazy", "unmotivated" or "disruptive", without understanding the complexity of their inner iceberg.
Therefore, teachers and families are the fundamental pillar to provide an unconditional supportive environment, understand their needs and serve as anchors when the sea offers dangers or anchors that guarantee them safety.
Double exceptionality does not define. In a sea in which we all sail, those with double exceptionality are beings full of potential, with dreams and desires like any other, who with the right support, can develop their talents to the fullest and sail towards a bright future, without waves to stop them, and it is your job and mine to help make that happen.
