Look at these two pictures. There are 40 years between them. The first one dates back to the 1980s, when there was a fine hotel for the better guests in the middle of this city in East Germany, called "Weltfrieden" ((World Peace"). Most of the glamour had long since gone, the former splendour had faded. The first hard drinkers were usually already sitting in the spacious restaurant rooms at half past nine in the morning.
There were several shift changes during the day, sometimes behind the bar, sometimes in front of it. When the country whose pub culture shaped such establishments dissolved, "Weltfrieden" did badly at first and then worse and worse. Finally the house was sold, there was a change of operators and operators and operators... and at some point the door simply remained closed.
Everything that followed happened without "Weltfrieden". The house has changed hands again and again, but never found anyone who would pick up a trowel of cement or repair anything.
Today the enormous house - you can only see a small section of it in the photo - is a lost place in the middle of the city centre, a ruin in the making. without the former name, but decorated with graffiti from top to bottom. But if you are looking closer: It seems 40 years hardly make a difference.
