For today's WednesdayWalk, I'd like to invite you to join me on a scenic one at a cape in Xàbia/Jávea.

This Spanish coastal town is located by the Mediterranean Sea on the side of the Montgó Massif. As a result, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of both the mountains and the sea, as well as over 300 sunny days per year. It's a blessing in comparison to the dark and gloomy winter in many parts of Northern Europe. I went for a nice walk a few days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It is part of the Montgó Natural Park, a nature reserve with unique flora, fauna, and ecosystems. The entire reserve runs nearly parallel to the coast and culminates in 170-meter-high cliffs at Cap de San Antoni.

Plant micro-reserves can be found on the north cliff face and on a nearby isle. As you can see from my photos, the soil is very dry, and resilient plants and flowers sprout from the porous rocks. The vegetation adapts to growing in the cliff fissures and is able to withstand contact with salt water.

A watchtower was built at the tip here in the 16th century to protect the coast from North African pirate raids. It was later demolished when the current lighthouse was built in 1894. In 2020, it was converted into a Marine Reserve information centre. The light on top was still on and turning when it got dark. A small 14th-century chapel hermitage dedicated to Sant Antoni was also once present.

During my walk, I also witnessed a man launch his paraglider from a seaside cliff and fly between the mountains, the sea, and the sky. From up there, he must have had some spectacular views. White boats slowly sailed by, leaving long trails on the surface of the calm water.
