Aren't We Chasing Our Dreams Anymore?

One of my favourite music reality shows is Nigerian Idol. I love singing and always envisioned myself going for one of these shows since I was a kid. Over the years, it's been a delight seeing my age mates chase their dreams, even though I didn't have a dream to be a superstar, I had a dream to audition and experience a music show.

I wouldn't say that dream is dead because I believe I still have a few more years to tick this off my bucket list. I have social anxiety and crazy stage fright but I have been on stages and in front of crowds over the years to be able to work with my nerves on a bigger stage.

It only dawned on me recently that I no longer see my age mates on these shows as much. They're there but the average age on this particular show currently is 25. When I was younger, I used to see a lot of late 20s to mid 30s audition and make it through these shows, and now, there's very few of them.

It got me wondering if people don't chase their dreams anymore? What has changed and why are the numbers decreasing? A simple answer would be the older young adults are all chasing more profitable ventures now rather than chasing the clouds. It might also be that the shows prefer younger people because there's also been a significant increase in the number of older teenagers that sign up for the show.

Well, whatever it is, I don't put a timeline on my dreams so I'm still holding on to this dream of mine because I honestly do not have a lot of them but this is one that feels very realistic if I'm being honest with myself.

It could be the fear of not having something exciting going on or looking forward to as I get older, but I feel like I should always have a bunch of things I want to do that would get my adrenaline pumping, something not peculiar to my nature with a once-in-a-lifetime feel. Big or small, I love to dream, now I just need to chase it.
