Death, Taxes and Other Inevitabilities

So, I managed to get our annual property taxes paid by the deadline, and we can now live for another year in the house we allegedly "own outright."

On some level, that's definitely a good feeling. What's actually really cool about it is that this year's taxes were funded entirely by blogging liquid rewards... didn't have to power down anything this year.

What's not so cool is that all my interest bearing HBD savings are gone... Oh, well, such is this life we live; actually getting ahead is just a pipe dream, or so it seems.

Libertarians are fond of saying that "taxation is theft," but we have to pay for roads, schools and such. The whole "no government, no taxes" idea has a way of not working in "real life," as the people of Von Ormy, Texas ("The Freest little city in Texas") will attest to.

I lived up the highway an hour or so from Von Ormy back when I lived in Texas, but back then the town was mostly known for getting most of its city revenue from the local cops writing speeding tickets to visitors passing through at even two miles over the speed limit.

The failed Libertarian "experiment" actually made it to national news a few years back, joining other "freedom" stories like Slab City in the alternative history annals of "freedom isn't ACTUALLY what you want."

But I lack the cynicism of many as a result of growing up in Denmark where the citizenry actually doesn't believe the government is corrupt and out to "get them" in some way. Weird, I know. And somehow the national debt of Denmark is only about 11% of GDP, in spite of socialized medicine and free higher education. Weird, I know.

But I'm sort of "wandering," here.

Now I get to start over in building my HBD savings balance... in the hope of saving up enough by this time next year to help fund our trip to Denmark to visit relatives. Because part of the point of all this - aside from just pursuing my love of writing - is to create better lives for ourselves. Right?

Still, I have much gratitude for just being able to do this almost every day! I never had aspirations of becoming a "big deal" in the social media world... I just wanted to be able to do my thing, and that was about it.

Whether Hive ever manages to become a big deal remains to be seen, of course...

I hope it does, but this is such a fickle industry...

Onwards... and keep doing my best!
