Vintage Cheques, Photos And Window Blinds - Day 33 - The 100 Day Project

Day 33 of The 100 Day Project is a Thursday which usually means I have a full morning in the attic. However, today didn't work out like that as I had a hair appointment first thing. I had to get back from there by bus, which I hadn't planned for, which added an extra hour to the journey home. That meant I wasn't ready for attic art until just gone 12 and Rosanna was only able to join me for an hour or so.

We didn't get much creating done together but ended up booking a trip to London for a late birthday present for me. We're going to see 'Latent Spaces', an immersive experience of the fusion between art and technology. The plan is to catch the train to London and then walk along the Thames to Canary Wharf where the expereince is, taking in brunch along the way. Can't wait.

After Rosanna left I got down to "work" and started off with a quick inspiration walk'. This time I found some old bank cheques dated 1954. Soooooo cool. That was in the day when banks returned cheques to the payer. I think they might have been called drawers back then.

I love finding all this stuff I'd forgotten I'd collected. Most of it came from a house clearance stall at the local Sunday Market. They used to give stuff away at the end and no-one, apart from me was ever interested in the paper ephemera. I suppose to most people it's just junk.

Looking at it again makes me sorely tempted to return to my Sunday Market treasure hunts but I already have more items than I can use so I must resist. I hate to think of this rich history ending up in landfill though.

I had an idea to include some vintage photogrpahs in these clusters but I struggled to make it work. That is until I took a deep breath and took my scissors to them. Smaller focal points was what was needed rather the whole photo.

These are actually old family photos and it wasn't easy to use them in a cluster. I had to remind myself that they only made it to the attic because they are one of many or had some damage or were very badly taken etc. If they were a one off they wouldn't be here. None the less, looking at them made me very nostalgic.

The next thing I found was a number of packets of what I'm guessing is window blind samples. I have no idea where I got these from but I know I bought them rather than scavenged them.

I'd like to use them in a different project at some point. I can't think what, but the fact that thery are stiffer than normal fabric and probably waterproof means I ought to be able to think of something a bit different to do with them.

All together I created 4 more clusters and stuck them in the cluster book .

Each cluster consists of a strip of a vintage cheque, a strip of fabric torn from an old curtain (also found at the Sunday Market), a strip of the blind samples, a scrap of hand printed paper on an old book page, reclaimed thread and a strip taken from the old photos, all backed onto some gold tissue paper scavanged from a luxury food hamper.

P.S. I actually wrote a lot more detail on the construction phase of these clusters, including a story of the cluster that never was, but somehow I managed to lose the draft again. 😭 I don't have the time or energy to rewrite it now but you get the general idea anyway.

Losing a draft is a pain in the proverbial!

Touch wood that has been a while for me.

Cheques were cool, I remember getting our cancelled cheques back and having an account with the Midlank Bank too.

Your birthday trip sounds fun to be!

Yeah. Loosing the draft was very disappointing. It was one I'd spent quite a time researching too. 😪

I remember the Midland Bank but not getting cheques returned. You look way too young for that. 😁

That sounds like a most wonderful birthday present ! I bet it will be amazingly fun.

You were on a roll today, even with the delays and picked some interesting items for your clusters. Almost finished with that creative gift. It's will be nice for the recipient and has help you get through some days of the 100 day challenge.

I understand about not wanting to cut photos. I am reluctant to do the the same, but nearly everything I have has been scanned to digital now and most anything I have that is precious, I've shared digitally with my family too, so there is really no reason to keep them to be thrown out by the box when I croak ! LOL.....so I am reconsidering some things like that with my age and .... why not !

Sorting out the photos has been on my to do list for ages. I've done bits of it here and there but it feels overwhelming, especially as every time my Mum visits she brings yet another bag full.

I'm hoping to get the cluster book finished tomorrow and then it will be back to random stuff again. I've a couple of birthdays coming up in April so there will be more cards and possibly wrapping paper. Other than that anything goes. 😁

My Mom's birthday and Mother's Day is in may. I'm toying with trying my hand with making cards for both. My brother's birthday is the last day of this month, same day as Easter. Not sure if I will try for one for him or not.

I did think as I walked through the living room a few minutes ago. that maybe those paper bag table papers might be wrapping paper, maybe tied with some raffia.... but I'm sure many more ideas will swirl before it is over.

Can't wait to see the finished product and whatever shows up next.

What's holding you back from making the cards? I'm just curious.

I think your papers would make great wrapping paper and some cards to match would be perfect. 😍

Nothing is holding me back, the papers just haven't said "do it" yet. LOL So far they've just said "make more ! make more !"

We'll see....

It just crossed my mind that I gave away 2 Happy Birthday stamps in the last year or so. I only kept a couple for myself because I didn't see me using them anymore. 😂 Jokes on me !

Ah. I see. I do my greetings with single alphabet stamps but it's a lot of work. I have to clean around the letters before I actually stamp them. I'm not sure if that's because they were cheap or whether all rubber stamps are like that.

It's frustrating when you've given something away and then feel you might want to use it again. I did the same with a manual typewriter. Got rid of it because I wasn't using it much and then found I wanted to use it many times since. I've just had to find another way each time.

I had a small collection of stamps, not way too many and half of them Christmas where I stamped the envelopes of the Christmas Cards I used to send. I only kept about 3 and one red ink pad and gave the rest to my sister because she likes to use them sometimes. I truly had nearly not used them for years, not even once a year, so during the last re-organize spree I decided to let them go. I don't let things go fast, but it seemed so senseless at the time to keep them.

I have seen a set or two of the letters and numbers, but haven't chosen to buy any yet, but of course should something I wanted to do call for some, well I knew I would buy some. The birthday stamps hadn't crossed my mind till we were talking about the birthday cards and naturally, how I would get words on them was the next thought..... that lead to.... oh.... birthday stamps..... birthday stamps I don't have anymore ! LOL... oh well

oh nice! Midland bank....

I suppose to most people it's just junk.

? 😍

A question mark and a heart fave emoji. 🤔 Too cryptic for me. 😂

That's a lovely birthday present! I've read about Latent Spaces (and similar events) and it'll be a great experience!

I love all the esoteric "stuff" you have, and particularly like this group of clusters... the textures and colors work really well.

Thanks. It was a really challenging day today regarding the Cluster Book but, for better or for worse, it will be done tomorrow.

We're both doing so well though aren't we? I've never lasted this long in a challenge before. I think posting here and having people comment is a huge help so thanks for doing that.
