Winding down at Lily's Cottage means a load of stuff that need doing, and one of them was sorting keys for the house and the two B&B units! We know where each key belongs, but trying to label them was quite a job. Some locks have been changed over the years, and the obsolete keys were not thrown out! Why, I have no idea!
It's like batteries. In this home, when we're not sure whether the remotes are faulty or just needs a new set of batteries, the old and new ones often roll towards each other! Then it's a case of checking which batteries are the good ones!
We did the key sorting over the weekend, I tried colour coding them but need to buy more of the key labels.
Our B&B is unique; it's not just one door per unit. It's an entire cottage with three outer doors plus inner doors. The studio unit is simpler but also has an inner door key.
What a mission when guests locked the inner door key for the studio, and lost it on the beach!
Someone had mislaid the spare key and both our staff were on leave and out of cellphone range.
It was Christmas Eve and we had to call a locksmith to get it open. We eventually changed the lock!
If I was just moving house myself and not handing over a bnb, things would be way simpler!
The house is running empty, and my time here is running out!

But it's not that simple! I have to transfer ownership on the many online booking sites and update my financials. I'm way behind and the final annual tax season as well as provisional tax is looming!
I love doing marketing and interacting with prospective and existing guests, but books aren't my thing at all!
And, the conveyancers called yesterday to say things are moving fast, so looks like I'll be departing sooner than anticipated. Except, the new owners want me to stay a little longer.
I'm reminded of another story about a key.
When I walked into my first job on the very first day, I wore a broad suede belt that had a decorative key attached to the back of this belt.
My boss, dear Mr. Watt, who answered "Watt is my name", when asked "What is your name?" loved telling the story about how that key amused him.
I used to say, it was the key to my heart, still to be given away
to someone very special!
It was true, but I never thought I would end up with such a big handful of keys one day!

I always wonder about the key system when I'm staying somewhere - how many spares they got, that sort of thing. Wow. I didn't expect such complexity. Still, I'd expect calls and much head-scratching from the new owner once they've settled in ;)
Oops, replied from Silver Bloggers account.
Yes, I think there will still be phone calls when the staff aren't here. Tlhe guests who locked their inner door that one Christmas, must have been paranoid. It was their first day with us. We could not clean their unit that day, even if we had the key, because their intentions were clear⛔️
I had to label them, there are several sets - emergency keys for power failures for the garage door, access keys to the remote gate motor when its faulty, spare guest sets for when they need more than 1 set or lose their keys...and so on.
Sounds like you're keeping track of a lot <3 also, crazy people to feel paranoid around you!
Looks about as fun as playing Tetris or with a rubrics cube (I hate both) 😜🤦♀️
For sure was no fun, hope you're surviving the cold down in the Cape @clairemobey
ooooooooh its freezypeezy!!! We had a week or so of warm days but it didn;t last. Winter plays with us like this every year with a "false spring" of sorts. Even the poor flowers come out to early and then have to go back to sleep! Very relatable ! ☃️😴🥶🌷

When moving and cleaning out, every category of things that need to be done becomes a project, especially if you've been in one place for a long time.
I know it's exciting, the anticipation of the new, the lingering attachment to the memories there. A BIG new chapter! I know it's going to be a good one.
You're so very right Jacey, a BIG new chapter! And, it's 50 years of living in this house. Thank goodness I'm not a hoarder!
Yep, happy and sad, but I'm taking all the memories with me🤗💕
Ha I would much rather do the books than have to deal with all the people !LOL
Haha @new.things, right now I need both skills!🫣

Oh God, I don't envy you at all, but I'm sorry I'm not there to help you. I'm good at this and most likely you could use a helping hand.
Awe that's such a kind thought @erikah, I'm sure you'd find the job a breeze! I just need to focus on one thing at a time. My list has quite a few ticks next to it, so it's getting shorter😉
I am convinced that keys and their cousins batteries are the bane of life milady. 😜
Absolutely 💯 agree on that!
An outdated keychain is a huge challenge when not every key has been identified. Usually, you only deal with the ones you carry. And memory is crucial when using them. Now, in your case, managing a temporary tenant, it’s quite a challenge.
Perhaps, in the future, with the boom and ultimate triumph of home automation, QR is the solution. Although, to be honest, it doesn’t give me a full sense of security.
Greetings.
What a journey you're on! Sorting out keys sounds like such a small task until you actually sit down and do it especially with old ones still lying around. From little things like labels to the big tasks like handing over listings and sorting out the tax work, it’s really a lot to handle.
