Finding a surgeon who doesn't run for the knife is almost unheard of!
Putting a Spring Back in my Step was a spot-on prediction of what happened today!
My visit to the neurosurgeon went splendidly well. As I don't have severe symptoms he wants to take the conservative route, I'll go for a month of physiotherapy and he'll then assess how my body reacts. Surgery is put on ice for now, but I also realize that I need to set boundaries for myself!
A happy gal I am on this wet and gloomy Monday, which certainly does not reflect my mood today!
I have a new spring in my step and would like to share a little about St. Augustine's Hospital where the good doctor's consulting rooms are.
'The San' as it is affectionately known was established in 1892 by nine Augustinian sisters from France as a sanatorium to treat tuberculosis patients.
It now is owned by Netcare, one of our country's largest private hospital groups.
The hospital has grown in leaps and bounds and keeps expanding and being upgraded - it's not only a hospital, but also has various wings accommodating a plethora of medical professionals.
I don't think those nine nuns would ever in their wildest dreams have believed their sanatorium would grow into the wonderful facility we have today.
Old and new architecture blend beautifully.
The massive reception area with high ceilings feels like one is in an airport terminal; a gift shop, coffee shop, pharmacy, ATM, and a lounge waiting area.
View showing some of the original architecture as you walk into the lobby.
Turn around and you see the interior of this modern facade.
When I arrived in the parking garage today, I was unsure of how to get to the top level where there's extra public parking. I was given a parking bay right next to the footbridge that leads straight to one of the medical wings. Well, in fact, there are two footbridges leading to different wings accommodating many fields of medicine, and ultimately to the sprawling main hospital building itself.
It's like a labyrinth, one could easily get lost, but you only need to ask if unsure. The staff are amazing, always willing to guide one in the right direction. That's all I wanted to know, but I was led right to the doctor's door today. So yes, I had someone to hold my hand, and I also remembered the virtual hands holding mine today <3
The hospital is situated high up in Bulwer, a leafy genteel suburb of Durban. Views of the harbour can be seen in the background behind the emergency unit.
Walkways, narrow passages between buildings, through the front parking area, into the lobby.
The hospital's Catholic heritage is clearly visible by two statues in different sections of the hospital. The gracious statue representing Jesus Christ stands at the main hospital entrance. Note the Palm tree to the left must have needed surgery as well!
Right outside the Neurosurgeon's rooms is an atrium with a gracious statue of the Virgin Mary and a memorial garden.
I left home early as it was raining hard, and you never know what the roads would be like.
Thought I'd get there early and have a quick bite and a coffee, but I had to fill in forms galore. By the time that was done, there was no time for coffee, so by the time my appointment was over, I was starving.
I headed straight for the coffee shop, waited a long while, and almost left in a huff, but suddenly was seen and served in no time. I chose a carrot muffin, wasn't too bad, but nothing to get excited about. The cappuccino was ok'ish - yes I'm a fussy eater and a coffee snob!
Nothing was going to spoil my day however, I am a happy gal tonight, it for sure was no blue Monday for me!
Thank you to my friends for your encouragement, you all know who you are, and have a special place in my heart <3

What a gigantic hospital you went to! And yeah....as I work in surgery as well, us people tend to always think that surgery is the solution, so that you got a conservative option offered aint a bad thing.
I didnt find what your initial issue is? Hope all is well!!
Hi @karinxxl, I have a nerve being compressed at the C5-C6 level, as well as a small cyst in that region, causing numbness and shocks on my right side, from the shoulder down to the hip region, which only lasts a couple of minutes. At least I know now not to stress. and not tilt my head back, it compresses the nerve even more.
It's a very nice hospital but I'm hoping for no operation, hopefully, physio helps.
I love getting these coincidences. It's great that this health center exists and that you are happy with the care you received.
I was also supposed to see the doctor today, I have a thyroid surgery pending since last year; I feel fine right now and I almost wish the doctor would tell me that I no longer need the operation; the doctor couldn't see me today, and I read this post and I'm happy for you. Everything is fine.
Hi @charjaim, is your thyroid overactive? If so, have they given you more conservative treatment options? Why I ask is that I had thyroid surgery many years ago, they cut away too much so I now take thyroid tablets as it's not functioning at all. I was told this by an endocrinologist afterwards. Perhaps get a 2nd opinion?
I'm glad my post helped you!
Greetings, friend, yes, she is controlled hyperactive at the moment, the problem is that there is a somewhat large and submerged nodule that is already starting to cause problems, I choke easily and I have to be careful when eating. Definitely, it has to be removed, I would be on medication for life. Unless God decides otherwise, I am in his hands.
I was already anxious to hear from you, how you felt and what steps you had taken. When I read your post I felt joy, I see that you are taking things calmly and positively. Now go ahead and as the phrase says "dress me slowly I'm in a hurry" do what the Doctor says to the letter. Beautiful hospital perfect to feel good and notice that even to not stop sending us beautiful pictures. Take care @lizelle a hug.🤗🥰❤️❤️❤️
Thank you @mamani, I felt much better after the visit. He's such a nice doctor, very skilled in his field, so even if he has to eventually operate, I will not worry as it's not a very invasive procedure.
Good, now you will be calmer and go ahead. Everything will be fine. 🥰❤️
Thank God, No surgery!! This is very good news today 😃 I almost kicked out of my bed by my sleeping hubby, because I sigh and screaming happily when reading this🫣🤭 I forgot this is my bedtime 🤦
So happy for you @lizelle 😘🤗🤗🤗 huggy please. Do you have to come back to the hospital for physiotherapy?
Thank you @cicisaja, your poor hubby must have wondered what's going on😅 I'm very relieved. I'll go to my local physiotherapist, she's good. I just hope the physio sorts the problem out, otherwise, he'll have to operate but he says it is not very invasive surgery. Holding thumbs for physio!
Friend @lizelle I am so glad to hear that your visit to the neurosurgeon was positive and that you are able to avoid surgery for now. Sometimes, it is better to take a conservative approach and see how the body responds with less invasive treatments. Physical therapy can work wonders and I hope it helps you feel better.
Thank you @lanzjoseg, I appreciate your kindness. I really hope the physio works so I don't have to go for surgery.

I was walking on air for quite a while. Praying my body reacts well to the physio, but I'm not too stressed, it's not such an invasive procedure to remove the faulty disc. I had a fusion before and had no pain afterwards, especially compared to the pain beforehand. Now it's just the numbness and shocks, quite unsettling when it happens. Hope you're well my friend?
I think that the physio will work well. A few years ago, a doctor wanted to book me for a hip replacement, but by grace someone mentioned that I should go and see a certain lady. She is a top class physio, and she worked me mercilessly, on the mats and in a pool. A real torture experience, but the result was miraculous. Until today, the hip has never troubled me again, touch wood.
So, we will pray that your physio will also be successful.

That does look like a lovely place! I love all of the greenery!
Hola, Lizzie!
This is great news. I'm so happy for you that the neurosurgeon is going to try a more conservative treatment. I hope it does you good and that you get better.🙏
Take good care of yourself. Hugs 💕
I hope your health is getting better every day. The images show us a pleasant place to heal. It's good that hospitals like this exist. Here in Venezuela, the hospitals are sad. Greetings.
