We must learn from the birds
Today, while my students were writing a text about freedom, I was thinking about birds and I also remembered the poem Terredad de un pájaro by the great Venezuelan poet Eugenio Montejo. In that poem the poetic voice speaks to us about birds, but it also speaks to us about man. He tells us that:
"The terredad of a bird is its song... to repeat until the end the melody
while crossing the open air
its passing wings;
although it does not know to whom it sings
nor why,
nor if it can be heard in others someday
as every minute it wanted to be:
-more innocent.
From the moment he is born, nothing can take him away
from his earthly duty"...
Just as for birds, for man the most important thing should also be his song and his flight. And when I write the word “song” I mean his words, his thoughts, that voice that comes from his chest, his soul and that others can hear. That word is what makes him different from the rest of the human species.
The poem says that the bird does not know to whom it sings, but still persists in repeating, wherever it goes, that melody it carries inside. So, likewise, should be man: no matter to whom his words may reach, if they reach, if they do not fall on deaf ears, like an echo, he must repeat the message: he is a seed that seeks fertile soil.
Similarly with its flight, with its wings. There is nothing more unnatural, surely, than a bird in a cage. Once its wings are discovered and developed, the bird only knows that it must fly, be free, cross the firmament to know the heights. Man is not made to live "chained or imprisoned" either. Physical freedom, but above all, his spiritual and mental freedom should not be exchangeable under any circumstances.
Nowadays, when we live in fear of saying what we think, of expressing ourselves, of moving and crossing the limits made by men themselves, the spirit of the birds should spring up in us. To sing hard, so that everyone hears what we carry inside, a colorful, sonorous, luminous song, and then to spread our wings, those that many times, they have wanted to cut us.
