MAKE WAY FOR THE DUCKLINGS

IMG_1988 (1).JPG

A screech of brakes. A cloud of dust. But not a feather stirred as a string of little ducklings .... oh, I apologise ... a string of little goslings ... waddled across the road. A flurry of doors slammed open and excited squeals erupted as the children tumbled after the family of Egyptian geese. The resulting chaos ignited outraged squawks from mother duck .... excuse me ... mother goose. Like a perfectly practiced disappearing act the entire family - mother goose and all six goslings - vanished into the fast flowing waters of the flood irrigation channel. Gone. With not a trace of ruffled feathers.

But I was not about to be outsmarted or outswum by ducks. Erhm. Geese. I dashed home. Grabbed my camera and vaulted over our fences to the water flooding across our fields. It wasn't difficult to follow the joyous echoes of baby quacks. Six fluffy Egyptian goslings bopped merrily in the swirling water. Mama Goose took to the skies to lure me away from her bathing offspring.

But I was not lured. The clever little gaggle disappeared below the surface of the water to pop up far down the channel.

Except for one little guy. He called desperately for his mother circling high overhead. And then decided I was rather friendly. So he waddled to the grassy banks and proceeded to groom himself in the late afternoon sun.

The Egyptian pair have lived for many years around our homestead, foraging among my goats and holidaying in the neighbours pond but this is the first year we are blessed with a gaggle of babies born to them. In celebration I'm sharing our excitement with the bird loving @nelinoeva for this week 84 Free Theme

They are soooo adorable. ❤
How nice to have them so close to your homestead. I hope all to go well with the little ones.

Thank you. We have a bumper crop of little ones this Spring. Goat kids, calves, lambs AND the little Egyptian goslings.

Sweet!!! What a great surprise to have six little goslings around your homestead. I only have the Canadian Geese that left Canada years ago, never to return.

These Egyptians are as sweet as can be! Do they migrate? All the new Mallards are taking care of the droppings from the birdfeeders. They love sunflower seeds.

What a cute little story! I have missed you!❤️ I hope all is well with you and yours!!

Oh Denise! I missed you too! It has been a rollercoaster few months.

Many tears shed. Both of joy and grief. I think you know that we said goodbye to a friend after her struggle with cancer. She had the same as my first husband so I have been walking an intimate path through the valley of the shadow of death, with her and her family. My laptop has been faulty all year with momentary respite after servicing. But it froze for 3 weeks and is only (finally) repaired as of a couple days ago.

Thank you for letting me know how your Mallards are. As I was posting last night I remembered the little batch from last year. Yes, our Egyptian geese are seasonal. But strangely enough they are with us for winter but gone through summer....

Did I mention we have a wonderful new addition? Apart from all the baby goats. My children have a Lollipop! She's wonderful.

EDIT: My photos won't upload. I did a Lollipop post today but now I can't open that either. Slooooooow night time internet

I didn't comment yesterday because the photo wouldn't upload and I wanted to see it before I commented!

My laptop had been freezing off and on for a month. Always Thursday nights while I am doing the Market post. I tried to trick it and do it on a Monday, but, it would have any of that. Froze. :(

I am right there with you. It took me 5 hours to upload MF three weeks ago. 5 am it finally finished... because I have that kind of time to play. The winter/summer thing is funny. I have never heard of that, but, you are pretty hot in the summer.

Honestly, I think we both just need new computers. What is a lollipop, other than the obvious????

TADA!!! Sweeter than a lollipop

IMG_0905 (1).JPG

Oh, yes!!!! Much sweeter and better for you!! Is that your lollipop????

How beautiful!!

Isn't she gorgeous? She's 12 years old. Her lifelong owner used to train children on her. She was also a show horse. Although apparently she hated it. She still holds herself like royalty! And she talks. Her favourite thing is to eat lemons out of our hands and to have her bum scratched.....for as long as possible. The previous owner could no longer keep her and stabled her with distant neighbours who were not caring for her. We connected and she heard about my kiddos and our homestead. She has given us "My girl Lollipop" which of course meant that we had to teach the BuckarooBabies the songs! We are now looking for an equally sweet friend for her. Until then she lives at our neighbours (who are teaching my children to ride) They have three horses who free range the farm along our border.

Congratulations!
