Birdwatching Around Drakensberg Dams

Fond Memories In Spring With Feathered Friends Southern Africa

Photography not yet shared after visiting the Drakensberg, October 2020 going into months of courtship, nest building, there was a lot of song and dance all around!

Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus larvatus) a bird you will hear the liquid warble through vegetation, seldom see, even though presented in bright plumage.

Black-headed Oriole (Oriolus larvatus)

0816-Oriole.JPG

Looking up into the tree where you hear the call, waiting I was lucky enough to get one or two reasonable photos of the bird moving, Normally feed on insects or fruit, in this case I would imagine insects.

SA_Hive_LineBreak.png

Black-headed Heron (Ardea melanocephala) A big bird with not much song, more a variety of squawks, growls, gurgles and croaks. Nesting between July to November the wet season, here is one high in the tree, very close to water where it will find plenty favourites foods to feast upon.

0856-Black-headed Heron.JPG

With many dams in the area these bigger birds find sufficient supply of food, abundance of established trees in the valleys afford them nesting sites.

Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) Another tall bird came in before sunset, landing on an island of reeds, the rusty coloured markings in late afternoon sun hopping through the reeds made it difficult to get clear photographs.

0973-PurpleHeron.JPG

Purple heron has distinctive black head marking, a shy bird, and is half the size of the Goliath Heron we see down along the coast.

Another bird with the "S" bend neck more recognizable when swimming, here either finding food beneath the reeds or settling down for the evening.

African Darter (Anhinga ruta) Enjoying end of the day many birds enjoying the last rays of sun falling into the small dam, an African darter sitting with a Pied kingfisher (Ceryle rudis) quietly surveying the world around them.

0944-AfricanDarter-PiedKingfisher.JPG

Kingfisher did not sit long, photographing the African darter with air heavy with midges we call then miggies making distant photography a nightmare. Fortunately these midge didn't bite and make a good dinner for most smaller birds.

0948-AfricanDarter.JPG

Following photograph was taken a couple of days earlier in the shaded side of the dam slightly earlier, obviously considering a last fishing trip for the day.

Next time will be the smaller birds in the vicinity, bird life in the region during early Spring is something special to behold, plenty not yet revealed photography to come.

Gorgeous bright sunny morning, birds quietly going about their business, most in yellow dress are easy, just not as shy.... real tease!

Work never ends, not enough hours in the day, at least no commuting which keeps one a little more sane over here... !BEER and !WINE to keep the cogs turning 😆

Command accepted!

The sun has come back here too, but it's still cold and windy. Tomorrow will be better they say.

To find the few really colorful birds we have here you have to know more about birds than I do, and foremost you have to have much more patience than me 😁

Work never ends, that's right, but annoying is the stupid work, the work that doesn't even need to be done, at least not the way my bosses think is best, because it isn't...

Some very unique birds that I haven't seen before. Always relaxing though. I use to do this more when I lived up north in the states.

Nothing more relaxing than bird watching, whether around the garden at home or away in the bush.

Lovely shots, what fascinates me is how you get to know the name of these birds, must be some work trying to find what they are called.

Growing up my Dad always taught us the common names, once you remember... finding the rest is not too much of a problem, obviously I don't know the given 'family names' those I use my research site for. 😄

I will remember you whenever I need a name for anything related to nature, as much as I like flowers I suck at the names!

Not everything, but quite a few having grown up with parents who loved nature always pointing things out, fresh young minds are like sponges... (not so much anymore)!

tip

Thanks for visiting @melinda010100 have a lovely day.

Excellent observations! 👍 Interesting birds. Especially the Oriole. She is incredibly cowardly and cautious in Siberia, is it the same in your country?

Always in hiding, even with flamboyant colours they are difficult to see, you hear them seldom see them in the tree tops.

Beautiful collection of birds you have here i love them Heron birds they remind me of witches flying around 😄

Tall stately birds, thank goodness for zoom capability with most being high up or safely tucked away where humans cannot reach them.

Would love to be photographing all sorts of birds but you really need to be dedicated and have the right tools and you did pretty good 👍

Standard average camera and a lot of good luck! 😁

And you did a great job which your standard average camera 😊

Amazing shots @joanstewart, nice catch. I was the most impressed by Black-headed Oriole. Its colors are wonderful! The whole collection is beautiful, patience & focus lvl: max 😄

Enjoying quiet walks gives one time to focus on what is around, the Oriole was fun to capture. Have a great day, thanks for visiting.

Thanks Feathered Friends Team!

That black headed Heron is absolutely gorgeous. We have a lot of hawks and smaller birds (orioles, cardinals, etc) around here. The hawks are elegant, but that Heron is precious.

We have a lovely variety of heron birds coming and going in different parts of the country, always exciting to see both large and small birds never knowing what is going to pop into your line of vision.

You have a lot of big species of birds there. That black headed heron looks huge.

They are large not quite as big as the Goliath 😌
