Relationship Birds Have With Berries and Fruit

in Feathered Friends3 years ago

Can You Get It Down?

What relationship happens in nature once a birds swallows the berry with a large pip, it all goes down, then goes through next thing you know a similar tree is growing in the vacinity.

Yup you guessed it they poop it out in about half an hour to make space for the next juicy morsel to go in. Many birds that enjoy fruits and berries also take insects attracted to the fruits, helps in keeping insects at bay.

In the garden nestled directly in under the larger tree a commotion was going on, opening the window further to spy out without disturbing the Cape Glossy Starlings (Lamprotornis nitens) from feasting on the bright red berries of the Common white jasmine (J. officinalis) captured in the act.

Cape Glossy Starlings stay to wetter regions all the way down from Angola into South Africa following well watered regions.

On this day about fifteen arrived, letting the world know they had arrived.

Dark-capped bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor)

Earlier in the month a Dark-capped bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor) arrived to sample the berry as well, apparently this berry may be poisonous with few birds witnessed enjoying them, the monkeys fortunately appear to leave well alone.

Dark-capped Bulbul are found in our Eastern region of South Africa enjoying woodlands, homes with trees and parks.

Mushy face

Story of rambling around the river when fruits are ripe on the trees capturing next is a Forest Canary (Crithagra scotops) diving into the fruit, being along wooded river region this bird is fond of seeds, flowers and fruit.

An endemic little bird to South Africa and Swaziland they enjoy bathing in the rivers where I spotted this one in the Common Wild Fig - Ficus Thonningii, fruits used with wasps planting larvae within is possible in giving added nutrition.

Hi @joanstewart, birds are the greatest to past the time away with, they are so very interesting and I must admit I have not seen birds eat whole berries before. What a quick process of digestions with the seed popping out the other end in about 30 minutes. A fantastic to grow new trees. Loved your photos and seeing birds that I have not seen before.

Birds help spread seed with fertilizer, their own form of pollination I suppose. Downed in one big gulp that appears they have no problem enjoying.

With two species bearing fruit the corner becomes quite a hot-spot, above shrubs are two trees that also bear fruit and berries at different times to keep seasonal visitors happy.

The starlings are beautiful, but their eyes are hypnotizing. I like the Dark-capped bulbul most - it looks cute sitting there in the tree :)

Quite zany eyes for starlings to mesmerize you, agree little bulbul with yellow bottom is super handsome. Canary stole the show with face full of fruit, no doubt enjoying it's full.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the Canary - we have had a yellow Canary when I was a child. It landed on a finger and was very tame, but that's pretty much all I remember.

I hope you've had a nice weekend Joan ☺️

As children we had two canary and two budgies in two cages that never flew free, I always disliked caged birds although very pretty, it was a fad years ago to keep them. Glad ideas/fashions have changed!

Monday, Monday back to the grindstone, enjoy!

Hi Joan,

we let the canary always fly in the kitchen, but I can't remember what happened to it. I don't know any people nowadays who have caged birds.
Yes, I'm very happy to be back at work 😫 but I hope you're having a great week 🌞

Canary most probably took the gap and escaped, no one keeps caged birds that I know of that was a fad of yesteryear thank goodness.

Strange busy week with life, but getting there.... one day at a time. You know that "African Time" 😁

Half week is almost over and mine is busy too, but that's not strange after a week off work and I'd need two days at a time 😁

Ha, I did not think about the pip LOL.
These birds seem to enjoy a lot the fruit. Wonderful shots!

Learning about migrating plants, dual aspect in planting.

Have a great day @nelinoeva and thanks for the great weekly topics.

You shared such great shots of them all

I hope your weekend is going well

Starlings swoop in numbers, never visit long but very vocal. Bulbul is always vocal at sunrise and sunset, little canary was too busy but the tune will be gentle unlike the crazy bunch of starlings.

!BEER for some cheer 😄 have a good one!

I often hear birds but seldom get shots of them. Lol

Cheers and !BEER

They do tend to hide out or move very quickly, lots of patience over the years and love of the birds visiting.

What an enjoyable submission to the contest ! 😊

Glad you enjoyed it @barbara-orenya, also noted you need some nifty topic names...

Birds Bottoms Up!
Bird Sexy Leg Parade.

Two to consider for your collection 😁 Happy Sunday!

Your propositions are indeed nifty, but I fear they have (maybe not in such funny terms) already been themes of previous SMAP contests...😉

Not surprised with the great topics already passing me by, good luck and if I think of anything new I will drop it into the chat for you.

👍 you often have some brilliant insights 😀

Outlandish colourful birds 😆
Have fun something will come to mind....

it's so nice to see the birds from your area in your posts. i am familiar with many birds in europe, india and north america but yours are all new to me. thanks for sharing

In many cases with birds they are similar, not the same, many strictly from certain regions making bird watching extremely interesting.

Thanks for visit and comments @eolianpariah

that is definitely a close relationship with fruits. bingo!

Ha ha, definitely caught in the act!

Thanks for visiting @qwerrie

Beauty photos!!

Glad you enjoyed @oscurity have a great new week.

A lovely capture of the Cape Glossy Starling with the red fruit in it’s mouth. It’s a wonder they can swallow so big a fruit. These birds remind me of the grackles with the glossy coat and yellow button of an eye.

Amazingly very little fruit on the berry it's more pip, spreading flora far and wide 😂.

Yellow eye pops out against the iridescent colours, you know you being watched!

Lovely shots my friend and only the dark capped bulbul that I don't have.
The bulbuls here have white rings around their eyes.

!BEER

Bulbul appear an all year round bird along with the Mossies really have a lovely song in a chatty sort of way.

!BEER

Yep, I think the songs of the BulBuls are very similar, as up north the BulBuls don't have the white rings around their eyes and yet the ones down here sound very similar.

The Robins here sound different and they also have a lovely series of natter and songs.

!BEER

Cape Bulbul (white eye trim), African bulbul (red eye trim) and Dark-capped bulbul all in tune with song, lovely to hear them daily, I believe they will interbreed where both are in similar region, not too sure.

Only see Robins when in forested areas on walks, not a regular to the garden.

Oh yeah one big happy family of BulBuls that live in different parts of the country. They wear the colors of their provinces.
No idea if they would interbreed though.

Yes, we are lucky as we have pair of Robins that live here and there are many all over the place.
In fact I posted a Robin today stealing the cheese from a white-eye.

Birds are brilliant no matter where, always up to antics either in song, or looking for something to scoff down.

So true Lady Joan and can you believe that there are 43 of the 52 endemic species in the the country in the Western Cape Province.
So yes, it's a bird circus here.

What a wonderful post and I always learn something new when I meaner over! Thank you. My friend brought a red-headed bulbul home from (I thought) the Philippines when he was assigned there. I am not sure he was supposed to and not sure how it got here, but, it was the cutest little thing I have ever seen!

Diving into the figs is such a hard job, but, somebody has got to do it! :)

Always such a fun place to visit! Thank you, Joan! @joanstewart
