The Harpy Eagle is the largest bird in the Western and Southern Hemisphere and one of the most powerful of all raptors.

Curious fact:
Harpies can live up to 50 years and mate from 4 or 5 years when they complete their plumage.

Characteristics:
Females are larger than males. The harpy can measure up to 1.8 meters. 2.24 meters (distance between ends of the wings). Females can weigh 18 lbs and males 11 lbs.

Currently the harpy eagle is in danger of extinction in the Atlantic forest.
The bird is very sensitive to deforestation since it builds its nests in taller trees, those trees that generate more interest among lumberjacks and are the first to be cut down.

This majestic bird of nature is at great risk of disappearing completely from the Atlantic rainforest.
