Luring a male Peacock to come and eat.

in Feathered Friends2 years ago

Not easy, but I know a few tricks to get them to dine from my wife's hand.
034.JPG

This guy came strolling past and I held out my hand, making some bird noises that would stir his interest.

Excitedly my wife jumped up to get a small bowl of grated cheese inside the restaurant. We were seated outside in the open air and having some coffee, as they roast a delicious blend of coffee beans.
The peacocks are wild and they made their home on this wine estate. So I will show you some success with my luring abilities and then I will show you some bird psychology.
Come and see.

Bingo! The cheese worked and my wife started feeding the peacock.
151.JPG

155.JPG

Now if you want my lady happy, give her something or someone to feed.
166.JPG

178.JPG

Right, the feeding was over and now for some mirror gazing.

Checking if his mouth (beak) is clean and that his nose is clear after his meal.
216.JPG

Looking at his chest in case of crumbs.
222.JPG

Fluffing in case any crumbs fell on his feathers.
219.JPG

Right and now, I will show you some bird psychology.

All of a sudden, our peacock hurried away from our table, as he saw something.
005.JPG

Ah! It was another male peacock that appeared on the scene and our guy at the front made a beeline to another place.
080.JPG

He went and sat at a children's playground in the far corner, while all of the time keeping an eye on the other peacock.
304.JPG

302.JPG

Then he started an elaborate show to keep on drawing the other bird's attention.
320.JPG

All of the time watching the other bird.
316.JPG

341.JPG

He even pulled a nonchalant stretch to keep the other bird occupied.
346.JPG

Now why do you think that our bird did all of this? The answer is pure bird psychology, as our bird didn't want the other peacock to notice our table.
He was scared that if the other peacock came to us, then my wife will get more cheese to feed the other one and then our bird will lose out.
So, he was successful, as the other bird did not notice our table.
We really enjoyed the show and if I could, I would have shaken our bird's hand to congratulate him.

So similar to our lives isn't it? I score something great and I fear that others would also want it. So, I have to make a plan for them not to notice it. I will either hide it and if it is in a situation like the one above, then I will have to divert their attention. So, I would make faces in a shop window and then put up some kind of show.

Now what kind of show could you imagine, that would draw the others attention away from your great find?

Wow right out of her hand!

Those are surely some majestic birds. I even love the superstition of picking those cool long feathers for ornaments as you know they had to stop people from collecting them.

They have peacocks in the little zoo in High Park in Toronto. I remember when they managed to take flight and screw off from captivity a few years ago. Had to find and collect them from the surrounding neighbourhoods. :)

Oh yeah, she feeds many of nature's residents out of her hand.

Sadly, he same with the Ostriches, as they are bred for their feathers that are used on the modelling walks and other applications.

I hope that they haven't captured all of the escapees, as if a couple were missed, then they will surely establish a new peacock community in the wild. :)

Hello @papilloncharity
So wonderful to see the peacock coming so close and eating the cheese.
What place is this ?
I has a similar experience with peacocks when I tried giving them some nuts and dry fruits they seemed to have a liking for them.
I thing birds too are getting choosy and have their own choices.

There is going to be a 10K leo threads quest

I invite you to join the $10000 Leo threads quest that is a big opportunity for all hive users .

Do let me know in case you need any assistance in this regard.
Take care and happy feeding more birds ;)

Thank you kindly and the place is a wine estate in the Western Province of South Africa.
Glad that you also had some similar experiences with the peacocks and yes, they are very selective about what it is that they eat.

I have received several invitations to join the Leo Threads, and I tried once to sign up, but there seems to be a problem with my Hive Keychain. Soon as I have it sorted out, you will see us on Threads.

We now have a squirrel mom with 3 youngsters that moved into our garden, and they take up most of my wife's feeding time.

You must also take care and thank you for the invitation.

!PIZZA

now use of hive keychain is no longer a limitation you can use hive signer as well
I had a hunch that you are somewhere in South Africa
My similar experience was in gold coast city South Africa in the theme park.

I had some experience with a Squirrel mom and its kids who made their home outside our Dining room window Oh boy what a noise they use to make during the stay.

Sorry with the late reply, but we struggle with power cuts over here.]

Thank you for the advice and I will try to open it with hive signer.
Great to see that you have been here and that you so well remember your experience with the peacocks.
Have you been elsewhere in South Africa?

Squirrels are all over the place here and yes, they can be noisy, especially to defend their territory, or having arguments in the family :)

!BEER

Dear @papilloncharity
I know about the power cut happening in South Africa and how difficult things can be due to that and everyone has to adjust accordingly.
How would things get as the weather gets colder in the coming months ?
Yes I have been to a couple of places in South Africa which are

  • Jo Burg
  • Gold Coast City
  • Cape Town
  • Pilanesberg
The memories that I have of the place is that South Africa is a beautiful country though the life for the residents is a lot of hard work and there are a lot of challenges on multiple fronts but still people take things in their stride and move ahead which is so commendable.
Take care and lets stay connected @papilloncharity

Hi @thetimetravelerz ,

They reckon in the news that the power cuts will be doubled now in our winter months.

I see that you have been around a bit in our country and that you have some good memories. Yes, we face many problems, but we are known for our endurance capabilities, as the simple saying is that life goes on. Besides, I do not know of any country in the world that doesn't have problems. It only makes all of us stronger.

Sure thing and my name is Zac.

!BEER

Yes you are absolutely right every country has its share of problems and we have to deal with them.
Nice meeting you Zac
I am Alok Have great Sunday or rather what is left of it.

I never knew they like cheese! Don't they peck when they pick up food, though? I always fed birds from my fingers instead...

Now what kind of show could you imagine, that would draw the others attention away from your great find?

The best way to divert anyone's attention (human or not) is by offering something free, isn't it?

This post has been manually curated by the VYB curation project

Oh yes and not any cheese, as they will only eat Cheddar cheese. No, they peck very carefully so as not to spill the cheese out of her hand and so it's only a tickle.

Exactly right, as anything for free is a sure way to divert attention.

Thank you for the curation.

Birds are very beautiful colorful, if it more in my home really better, we have to take care of them so that they can grow in my country, this species is very scarce.

Thank you and yes, the birds have lovely colors, especially when the males flare their tail feathers.
Glad that mention taking care of the birds, as if there are no birds, there will be no humans.
Birds know when and where they are in danger and maybe that's the reason why they are scarce.

Good day @papilloncharity, I heard we got the donation figured out. Cheers to that.

I can't believe those peacocks are wild, their feathers are amazing. I love your story, and sure it could work on us humans also, I am sure. 😁

Headed out to visit my daughter for the weekend, can't wait.

Enjoy your weekend.

Good day Lady Robin, yes at last we now know who our mystery donor is on PayPal and we are so glad that it is you guys, as it cannot come from anybody better.

The peacocks live on a wine farm, and I think that some owner of the farm 100 hundred years ago, brought the first ones in. The same with the squirrels and a few other species. Now they roam all over in our country. Mother nature holds many lessons for all of us.

Yes, it sounds like it's going to be great to visit your daughter and maybe also to see some grandkids that Grammy love so much ❤️ !LOLZ

I went to Portugal once and went to a park next to a river that was filled with peacocks.
I tried to touch them but I had no luck. If I go back I'll definitely try the cheese trick XD🧀🧀

Great that you saw all of the peacocks, but don't be surprised if the cheese doesn't work, as they will first have to get to know you.
