Feathered Friends Round 68: Female Hummingbirds And Others

in Feathered Friends2 years ago (edited)

This week’s contest is dedicated to the female birds. Most male birds stand out with their colorful plumage and now it’s time to display the females.

This Feathered Friends contest is hosted by @nelinoeva.

Theme

Female Birds

Check Here for more information on the contest if you are interested in joining the fun.

At first I thought I didn’t have any birds in my photos where the female could be distinguished from the male. The feathered friends that frequent my backyard, such as, blue jays, juncos, doves and robins, all look alike.

A light went off in my brain when the lovely little hummingbirds returned from the South a few days ago and there is a definite difference between the female and male.

Female hummingbird coming to the feeder on my back deck.

The female hummingbird resting on the clothes line.

Hummingbirds cannot stand up but can curl their claws around a small round branch or something round like this clothes line.

To show the difference between the female and male hummingbird ~

The male ruby throated hummingbird at the front deck feeder. The little male is distinguished from the female by the colorful red throat.

Males need the extra display of color to attract the female.

The female mallard duck with her babies. She is a mottled brown color.

Here she is with her attractive partner, the male mallard, with his glossy green head.

I can’t tell the difference between the female and male grouse unless he is doing his dance of sin by fluffing up his feathers to look more attractive for the female.

This is the little critter in the yard chasing after the female grouse with his tail and neck feathers fanned out. He also makes a drumming sound.

The female is completely ignoring him.

I would like to thank our judge @oks2crypto, who is helping choose, among all entries, the winners.

Huge thank you Feathered Friends Community and @melinda010100 for sponsoring the contest

wooow nice & beauty👍😍😍😍😘

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a lovely comment, 😊 💕

👍The hummingbirds are so small! It's like insects.

They are tiny but a wonderful little bird. I always worry about them making the long journey back here each summer.

It is bizarre I think that it is normally the male birds that are the 'colourful' ones.
The male grouse doing his dance of sin made me laugh. Quite often it is only during mating that differences come out.
Awesome pictures and good luck this week:)

Thanks for the visit @tengolotodo. Happy to give you a chuckle. It was hilarious watching the little male fan out and chase the female crouse. I did feel sorry for him~ with all his theatrics the ladies ignored him. :)

haha yea the antics of male birds and the resulting female reactions or lack of them are often hilarious and being a male I tend to have sympathies for them hehe

I love to see the lovely little hummingbirds, they are so cute. The male birds are more colourful but the female have a more ladylike elegant beauty and often I like these more.

Wishing you a wonderful new week, dear Jo 🤗🌞

It was so nice to see the hummers back for the summer, Hannes. It’s amazing these tiny birds travel a great distance going and coming from the South…some as far as Mexico or Central America.

I don’t know if they travel in a straight line but

“The total straight line flight distance from Canada to Mexico is 2,576 miles. This is equivalent to 4 146 kilometers or 2,239 nautical miles.”

They alway arrive back here around the 10th of May and I make sure to have the feeders out as they must be in need of a drink.

Thanks dear Hannes for the reblog and everything. The females birds do have a special quality. 😊 🤗

Have a wonderful week ahead and don’t work too much..the mountains are calling. 😉

Hi Jo,

they are flying a quite long distance, what a journey it must be for these small birds. If I have time I will take a look how they travel.

Wishing you also a wonderful Tuesday, dear Jo 🤗🌞

I can hear the mountains calling, but I only have time for short visits at the moment 🙃

Here’s some info I found, Hannes, on their first lap to cross the Gulf of Mexico when coming this way.

I’ve only seen the Ruby-throated hummers here.

Ruby-throats do not travel in flocks during hummingbird migration. Instead, each bird follows its own instincts on appropriate departure times and routes.

Scientists believe that each hummingbird begins its migration in response to environmental triggers. One trigger is the changing level and angle of sunlight. Another trigger is believed to be a drop in available natural food. As these signals continue to activate, the hummingbird makes its preparations and eventually departs.

On their northward trip, most have reached Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula by February. In this lush jungle, they begin to feast on insects as they prepare for one of the toughest migrations for any bird. Each year, thousands of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds fly over the open water of the Gulf of Mexico rather than follow the longer shoreline route. These brave little birds will fly non-stop up to 500 miles to reach U.S. shores. It takes approximately 18-22 hours to complete this amazing solitary flight.

Some hummingbirds aren’t strong enough, though, as many oil riggers and fishing boat crews can attest. Every year, exhausted Ruby-throated Hummingbirds take temporary refuge on offshore oil rigs and boats floating in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. These birds rest a while before bravely launching back into their flight across the open water.

When they return south, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds will follow the same daring migration route in reverse. They’ll charge up their energy reserves in the southern U.S. and then zip across the gulf toward their winter home. That’s two big, non-stop trips each year for Ruby-throats – you have to admire their tenacity!

Wow, Jo, thank you so much kindly for doing the research for me 👏
These are really brave little birds, flying 500 miles over the sea 😀

I hope you're having a wonderful Tuesday, dear Jo 🌞🤗

Oft times we think the female dull yet closer inspection in many reveals the exceptional camouflage offered for protection of young.

Males are only swanky for short space of time then many set to work finding food for the family !LOLZ

Thanks for sharing the little gals up North Jo.

Did you hear about the guy who threw his alarm clock while hosting a party?
He wanted to see if time flys while having fun.

Thanks Joan. It does make sense the female is less conspicuous to help camouflage her from predators as she cares for the babies.

I hope you are well and things have settled down in your country.

Enjoy the week ahead, my friend. 💕

Nothing very settled in country nor infrastructure, slow but hopefully one day.

Female birds more realistic blending into surroundings, fully aware of some thick bushes they nest in yet to find the nests, the little ones are that good!

Have a wonderful week as well Jo.🤗

Female birds deserve a bit of highlighting indeed ! 😉

They sure do Barbara @barbara-orenya. 😊

Awesome photos and entry Jo!! There is something so special about seeing Hummingbirds! I loved the photos of the ducks also! Good luck in the contest! 💞

Thanks dear Dee. The hummers are special little birds and it always gives me a lift just seeing them return every spring, 💕

Have a wonderful evening! 🌞

Most welcome and you too! 😊

Gorgeous photographs and excellent job capturing the hummers, as well as the other female birds Jo! 📸🐦📷

Hummingbirds are next to impossible to photograph with a smartphone and I've only recently started using my Nikon D3500 DSLR. Our hummingbird feeder was filled and hung for the season only two days ago after a hummingbird came up to the glass trying to dab at the African violets flowers through the kitchen window. Poor thing buzzed away feeling foolish.

I can’t tell the difference between the female and male grouse unless he is doing his dance of sin by fluffing up his feathers.
The female is completely ignoring him.

This made me chuckle! 😀😅😂

Good luck in the contest and a happy rest of the week to you! @redheadpei 🔆 💜🌙

Thanks Nina. 💕 I’ve seen the hummers come up to the kitchen window if I had something red on the table. I make sure not to put anything colorful there now as I don’t want them to knock themselves ot on the window pane.

Always a pleasure to see the little hummingbirds. 🙂
I wish someday to see them in person. Until then I will admire your photos.
Lovely to see the duck family and the grouse with her wooer. 🙂

You got some lovely clear shots of the little female hummingbird Jo. Even though they are not as colourful as the males they are nonetheless beautiful. 💝

Thanks Angie. Yes the female has her own beauty. 💕

Oh! Look at those beautiful creatures, I especially loved the mother duck with her babies. Nature is amazing so as your pictures ❤️

Thanks @coinfactor for your lovely comment. 😊 💕

Well come dear sir

Lovely to read this. I love this creatures and I admire how in Central America they are seen as an animal that is connected with our ancestors and when you see them they guide you through path of our lives.

Thanks! Appreciated @khang572.

Well come dear

Lovely theme "females". I can never tell the difference, unless I now one to be more colorful or larger/smaller than their male counterparts.

Thanks for sharing.
