Hello, Hivers! Here's the @encouragement project from the @aliento's team!

Today, we will learn a little about a topic you may not know in detail, such as the Hive Witnesses.

For this, @dimeilaz and @eddiespino made a video detailing some important aspects of witnesses, such as their main functions, how much they earn, governance, and what it takes to be a witness.

In addition, they also explain how to be part of Hive Governance without running a node but voting for one as such, using our votes available at the top of witnesses.

What are Hive Witnesses, and What Do They Do?

A Witness in Hive is a person or project that runs the blockchain's source code through a machine known as a "Node." This preserves the decentralization of security because the only way Hive would "disappear" would be if all nodes were shut down simultaneously. The more Hive tokens there are, the more secure the blockchain will be maintained over time.

The main objective of a Witness Node is to decentralize the security of the blockchain and produce the blocks where all the information about all the transactions that take place daily on the blockchain is stored.

However, a witness node can have another type of impact within Hive that makes it worth the community's votes because witnesses are chosen based on a Hive Power stake in their proposals, and these proposals must be attractive and logical for the community to vote for.

20 main witnesses are part of Hive Governance and can change the blockchain through what we know as "Hardfork" based on majority decisions.

What does a Witness get in return for its work?

When producing and validating a block of information within the blockchain, each token gets an incentive in Hive Power. This comes to 0.3 HP every 3 seconds for governance nodes (the top 20) and around 1.512 HP for backup nodes, with a different timeout range depending on the position within the top of tokens.

Top 20 Witnesses and Their Roles

Here, we are going to show you the witnesses that are in the top 20 and are part of Hive Governance so they can make direct changes to the blockchain source code, and we will mention the work they do to be part of it:

  1. @arcange: Creator of HiveBuzz, HiveAuth, maintainer of HiveSQL, and more.
  2. @stoodkev: Developer of Hive Keychain.
  3. @gtg: Hive core dev.
  4. @blocktrades: Hive Core developer and one of the biggest whales in Hive.
  5. @good-karma: Hiveeveloper of Ecency.com and HiveSigner.com.
  6. @steempeak by @peakd: Creatord of PeakD.com, PeakMonsters.com, and many open source projects such as HiveHub.dev, PeakVault, and more.
  7. @ausbitbank: Full node operator, creator of https://hive.ausbit.dev/, and more.
  8. @roelandp: Designed the Hive logo, created the HiveWallet.app, and organizer of HiveFest.
  9. @ocd-witness: Witness for the OCD curation project. Creators of @poshtoken.
  10. @quochuy: Developer for the main frontend of Hive: https://hive.blog/.
  11. HivemaHiveark: Developer of Hive Punks and Abuse Fighter.

  13. @therealwolf: Developer of Hive.io.
  14. @yabapmatt: CEO of Splinterlands.
  15. @guiltyparties: Operations, abuse fighter and part of ValuePlan.

  17. @smooth.witness: Developer of HBDStabilizer that helps to keep the HBD at $1.00
  18. @threespeak: Developers of 3speak.tv, SPK Network, Distriator.com and more.
  19. @pharesim: Founder of Curangel curation project.
  20. @abit: Hive Developer.

Backup Witnesses

Backup witnesses are those ranked below the top 20. They produce one block in each round of 21 blocks, with the top 20 witnesses producing the first 20 blocks and a backup witness producing the 21st bless.

Here, we will show you some backup witnesses that we believe do important work and deserve to be mentioned as suggestions for votes.

Highlighting 10 backup witnesses

We also want to highlight some Hispanic witnesses besides @aliento. Here's a quick list:

  • @hivecuba: Cuban community on Hive. Working on onboarding, education, crypto adoption, curation, and more.
  • @empo.witness by @empoderat: A Hive user from Spain who contributes to decentralization through his Hive backup witness node.
  • @la-colmena by @ylich: Developing and building for Hive and a curation project for the Spanish-speaking community.
  • @hispapro by @yonnathang and @alberto0607: A project that promotes web3 adoption in Venezuela.

Becoming a Witness

Anyone can become a witness on the Hive blockchain. To be elected, individuals must set up a witness node and gain votes from the community. As a witness's rank increases, they produce more blocks and earn more Hive Power. The election process involves campaigning for votes and demonstrating reliability and commitment to the network.

How to vote for a Witness

There are several ways to vote for a witness. It's important to know that to vote for a witness, you need to use your active key. If you want to vote for a witness from a mobile device, the best way to do it is through Hive Keychain. Check our tutorial to learn how to use it.

You can vote on:

To vote for a witness, click the button with the arrow pointing up or the checkmark. Remember, you can vote for up to 30 witnesses.

You can also vote on this website created by @cadawg.

Just add the username of the witness that you want to vote for, for example:

Our Experience as Witnesses on Hives

In the case of Aliento, we have achieved many objectives as hive witnesses, among which we can highlight the following:

  • The growth and empowerment of the Hispanic community: Through the support of many allied communities and the resources obtained through blockchain incentives, we have supported many content creators, which in turn has generated growth that has generated a virtuous circle.

  • Important development work: We have the vision to achieve important things at the development level. At the moment, we have interesting tools such as the bot that automatically pays our delegators through Disco, and we have in mind the development of many other things that can generate positive impacts on important topics such as user acquisition, education, etc.

  • Humanitarian work: Recently, we launched the @aliento.aid project, a non-profit project focused on supporting people with complicated health situations that require humanitarian support, in which we invite our community to participate.

Right now, we have many challenges ahead of us. Our main mid-term goal is to reach the Top 30 of the Top Witnesses and then reach the governance of the blockchain by entering the Top 20.

Also, we want to achieve the Orca status with ours. We aim to achieve this by having more resources to keep working to help others, support creation, and maintain user retention so the Hive user keeps growing.

Thanks for this info! I kept seeing a reminder that I hadn't voted for a witness, and honestly, I had no clue what that was about. I could have dug around for details, but then your post popped up at the top of my feed. It was super easy to understand and really helpful.

Hello David!

We are glad that this post was useful for you.

Let us know if there is any other topic you would like us to dive into.

I think something among the importance of curation or engagement could be interesting and useful. Engagement seems pretty low here at times especially amongst new users.

It would be cool having this video in Spanish as well, if there's an Spanish version tell me please. I must say I'm very pleased of being supporting Aliento with my vote and following its curation trail as it's a very high quality project.

Hello @atlashv96, on @aliento, we have this post in Spanish where we talk about witnesses:

https://peakd.com/hive-110011/@aliento/hablemos-de-los-testigos-en-hive-como-votar-por-un-testigo

We hope that it's useful.

In the future, we will make an AlientoCast episode about witnesses.

Thank you very much!

HeavyWeith. Saludos equipo 💎✅
