¡Hola a todos! Hace unos días, les conté que había sufrido una doble fractura en el tobillo (¡sí, doble!). Pues bien, hoy vengo a contarles cómo fue todo este proceso, desde la cirugía hasta algunos momentos que honestamente fueron de locos, esto todo desde mi experiencia vivida.

Hello everyone! A few days ago, I told you that I had suffered a double ankle fracture (yes, double!). Well, today I come to tell you how this whole process went, from the surgery to some moments that honestly were crazy, this all from my lived experience.

La cirugía estaba programada para el lunes por la tarde, pero para que esto fuera posible, tuvimos que viajar a Ciudad Bolívar, a una hora y veinte minutos de donde vivimos. Salimos temprano desde El Tigre, ya que el doctor nos pidió que estuviéramos allí alrededor de las 10 de la mañana.

The surgery was scheduled for Monday afternoon, but for this to be possible, we had to travel to Ciudad Bolivar, an hour and twenty minutes from where we live. We left early from El Tigre, as the doctor asked us to be there around 10 am.

El domingo en la tarde, el doctor confirmó cuánto costaría la operación (1800$) y nos aseguró que podría realizarla el lunes si estábamos de acuerdo. Aceptamos de inmediato, y me dieron instrucciones claras: no podía comer nada después de las 7 de la noche y debía llegar en ayunas.

On Sunday afternoon, the doctor confirmed how much the operation would cost ($1800) and assured us that he could perform it on Monday if we agreed. We agreed immediately, and I was given clear instructions: I could not eat anything after 7 p.m. and I had to arrive on an empty stomach.

Aceptamos porque salía 600$ menos que el otro precio que nos habían dado acá en el Tigre, también aquí me querían hacer la operación ambulatorio, lo cual quiere decir que me hacían la operación y de una vez me mandaban para mi casa, lo cual era una muy mala idea por tipo de operación, mientras que halla en ciudad Bolívar me dejaban en observación toda noche para ver mi recuperación. Ahora veo que fue muy decisión que se pudo haber tomado.

We accepted because it was $600 less than the other price they had given us here in El Tigre, also here they wanted to do the operation on an outpatient basis, which means that they would do the operation and send me home at once, which was a very bad idea due to the type of operation, while in Ciudad Bolivar they would leave me under observation all night to see my recovery. Now I see that it was a very good decision that could have been made.

El Momento de la Cirugía/ The time of the surgery

Cuando llegué a la clínica el lunes, me sentía ansiosa. Nunca había tenido que enfrentar algo así. Me colocaron una vía intravenosa, lo cual fue un desafío para mí porque no me gustan las agujas. Era la primera vez que tendría una vía durante tanto tiempo.

When I arrived at the clinic on Monday, I was anxious. I had never had to face anything like this before. They put in an IV, which was a challenge for me because I don't like needles. It was the first time I would have an IV for so long.

Me llevaron al quirófano, y la experiencia fue surrealista. Pasamos varias puertas hasta llegar a una sala llena de herramientas quirúrgicas y luces intensas. El anestesiólogo me explicó que la anestesia sería administrada por la columna, algo que no esperaba, ya que pensaba que sería a través de la vía. Fue un momento de mucha tensión, pero los médicos y enfermeros trataron de calmarme.

I was taken to the operating room, and the experience was surreal. We went through several doors to a room full of surgical tools and bright lights. The anesthesiologist explained to me that the anesthesia would be administered through the spine, something I was not expecting, as I thought it would be through the IV. It was a very tense moment, but the doctors and nurses tried to calm me down.

Una vez que me aplicaron la anestesia, no quedé dormida por completo como creía que ocurriría. Solo estaba anestesiada de la cintura para abajo. Los doctores me pidieron que intentara mover el pie con la fractura, pero no pude hacerlo. En ese momento, comenzaron la cirugía.

Once the anesthesia was administered, I did not fall asleep completely as I thought I would. I was only anesthetized from the waist down. The doctors asked me to try to move the foot with the fracture, but I was unable to do so. At that point, they started the surgery.

La anestesia me hizo sentir como si estuviera ligeramente tomada. Recuerdo vagamente el sonido de un taladro, probablemente cuando colocaban los tornillos para fijar mi tobillo. Lo más loco fue cuando vi que estaban proyectando en una pantalla grande cómo iba la operación. No pude resistirme y le pedí al doctor una foto. ¿Y saben qué? ¡El doctor pensó que quería una foto con él! Así que, en medio de todo, terminamos tomándonos una foto juntos. ¿Quién hace eso en pleno quirófano? 😂

The anesthesia made me feel like I was slightly taken. I vaguely remember the sound of a drill, probably when they were putting in the screws to fix my ankle. The craziest thing was when I saw that they were projecting on a big screen how the operation was going. I couldn't resist and asked the doctor for a picture, and you know what, the doctor thought I wanted a picture with him! So, in the middle of everything, we ended up taking a picture together. Who does that in the middle of the operating room? 😂

Después de la Operación/ After the Operation

Cuando la cirugía terminó, me llevaron de regreso al cuarto donde me esperaban mis familiares. Aunque quería contar todo lo que había vivido, me dijeron que debía descansar para evitar complicaciones como los gases.

When the surgery was over, I was taken back to the room where my relatives were waiting for me. Although I wanted to tell everything I had been through, they told me I should rest to avoid complications such as gas.

Unas horas después, intentaron sentarme, pero la reacción de la anestesia me jugó una mala pasada: mareos, náuseas y, finalmente, vómitos. Me administraron medicamentos para controlarlo, pero también sentía picazón en la nariz y la espalda. Fue una noche interminable, entre pequeños ratos de sueño y sobresaltos.

A few hours later, they tried to sit me up, but the reaction of the anesthesia played a trick on me: dizziness, nausea and, finally, vomiting. I was given medication to control it, but my nose and back were itchy as well. It was an endless night, between short bouts of sleep and jolts.

Recuperación y Alta Médica/Recovery and Medical Discharge

Al día siguiente, el doctor pasó a revisar mi evolución y confirmó que la operación había salido bien. Me dieron de alta con una lista de medicamentos y recomendaciones estrictas para mi recuperación. Aunque las primeras horas fueron difíciles, estoy agradecida de que todo haya salido bien.

The next day, the doctor came by to check on my progress and confirmed that the operation had gone well. I was discharged with a list of medications and strict recommendations for my recovery. Although the first few hours were difficult, I am grateful that everything went well.

Esto es solo el comienzo de mi recuperación. Todavía hay mucho que contar, pero ya les hablaré de mis primeros días posoperación en otro momento.
