While growing up, I have heard and read lots of stories about mermaids. According, to these stores, I know that mermaids live in water, especially seas and oceans. They are also very beautiful with a very long hair, a fish tail, and they are mostly fair in complexion. Also, they have beautiful kingdoms and are usually in charge of wealth and large possessions. However, I have always pondered the question "Are mermaids real?" To answer this question, I would share with you critical information that explain what a mermaid is and their significance to various cultures around the world.

Although a mermaid is often described as having the head and body of human, and a fish tail below the waist, most people believe that the mermaid is a mythical creature. This implies that it is a widely held belief or phenomenon but there is no scientific evidence to support their existence. Despite centuries of stories, no credible proof of a mermaid's existence has been discovered. According to research, they are simply misinterpretations of real sea creatures that may have been viewed from a distance.
Mermaid stories are deeply rooted in ancient folklores, myths and legends across various cultures. In some parts of the world, the mermaid symbolizes the sea god and the fertility of the oceans. Also, they often represent the destructive nature of the sea, and are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks, and drownings.

In European folklore, mermaids are described as very beautiful natural beings with long hairs, magical powers and prophetic powers. Also, many European stories portray mermaids as dangerous beings who could lure sailors to their deaths with their singing. On the other hand, some African culture often consider mermaids as a water spirit or deity. Cultures like Yoruba and Igbo in Nigeria tend to appease the goddess of water whenever they want to do anything on water. In Yoruba, the mermaid is called "Iyemoja", while it is called "Mami-water" in Igbo.
Iyemoja is considered as the major water spirit in the Yoruba culture and is often associated with the ocean and rivers, representing fertility, motherhood, and the power of creation. The worship of Iyemoja began in Saki, Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state. The Iyemoja is said to not be easily angered, but whenever she is angry, she can be quite destructive and violent. In the Igbo culture, Mami-water is considered as the goddess of the lake with a snake around her neck. She represents the art of divination and is associated with health and wealth, love, and good fortune.
Thus, we see that mermaids are widely held belief or phenomenon across various cultures in the world. While some view them as a mystical conception, some belief greatly in them and even worship them. Now, my question for you is: do you believe that mermaids are real, or they are just mythical conceptions?
