The Psychology of Flat Earth Belief

<div class "text-justify">

Before even knowing there was a thing called a conspiracy theory, I grew up believing we lived on a flat planet, I mean how do you expect a child to think that we live on a round planet, by the time I was old enough to have my first science class on Planetary, I still wasn't convinced, rather it confused me further about my understanding of the shape of our planet, the revelation from my science teacher kept my mind puzzled the more, questions like how come we aren't falling every now and then if the earth is said to be spherical and orbit the sun, why are the rivers and oceans not flowing out as the planet makes its round is it even a clockwise direction?

I'm sure you can also relate to these questions as a fellow layman without the complicated scientific knowledge that led to the discovery that the earth is spherical and not flat. from my little research, the evidence of this fact was credited to an ancient Greek philosopher named Eratosthenes (276-194 BCE) who was the first person to accurately measure the Earth's circumference, and also supposedly provided conclusive evidence for its spherical shape, which leads to another reason to doubt this claim, because, how was it even possible for one man to measure the whole of the earth and arrive at this conclusion, and not even in this time and age where we have advanced instruments/technologies to aid this experiment or findings , I imagined my young self, full of determination set out to measure just my city of residence alone, it's laughable to me because I know it's an impossible mission.

With these few points of mine, it is logical to see reasons why I would decide to be among the Flat earthers, also there is a conspiracy that It is the world's government's motives to hide the true nature of our planet, so we don't become aware, so they came up with vague scientific conclusions to change our mind from what we already perceive of our world, making us feel confused the more.

I recently came across a short video on YouTube titled God, I will share the link somewhere in this post, this movie validates the perception of we flat earthers, showing an indeed flat planet overseen by an old man who is supposed to be their god, in like sense, I believe they were trying to convince us not to become doubtful by what we already know, as the flat Earth theory gives us a sense of control rather than being forced to believe the scientist who is a fellow human and definitely can't measure this big planet all alone, even with some help, so what is the bad of rejecting the scientific conclusion and embracing a contrary view, I also have control over my perception and can believe what I choose to believe.

In conclusion, Not neglecting the fact that scientific evidence may truly prove that the Earth's shape is spherical, it is also important that we don't often neglect our psychological appeal of the planet we live in, because as humans, it is normal for us to desire control and understanding through our perception and my journey from childhood confusion to getting aware of the scientific claim is not about dismissing questions, but about embracing my curiosity and quest for understanding the most human way possible. that being said, I believe the flat Earth theory is less about the shape of our planet and more about our innate human desire to make sense of our complex universe.

Uptill till date, some laymen still argue about the shape of the earth, but they refuse to search and believe the truth they seek.

Thank you for this wonderful masterpiece.

Quite the first time I am hearing about this flat earth
