From Urban Struggles to Rural Stability: How Reliable Electricity Boosted My Productivity

Living in a rural environment can affect the psychology of someone—this was the statement from my close friends. What happens if you live in such an environment yet you are productive? I feel that is what matters. Unlike other people who have connections with some government officials to help redeploy them to a good environment to serve, I was posted by NYSC to a rural community.NYSC is a program in Nigeria organized for graduates to serve the country for a year, thereafter getting a certificate of service. It is aimed at making Nigerians explore other cultures and build integration with other youths in the country; so far, the aim has been achieved in my life because I can count the number of friends I have met from different cultures who share different beliefs and norms.

Despite how rural the vicinity I was deployed to make look, I can say that it has been a productive one for me. The major benefits of this area are constant light, a peaceful environment, and a good network connection. In the era that we are in, this is the desire of every Gen Z who wishes to do something better for his/her life. Within the month of May till now I can count the number of things I have achieved, starting from the online courses I have learned and meeting up deadlines without excuses. On the other hand, my cost of living is low since I make use of an electric stove and do not buy gas.

Before now, I lived in an urban environment with my parents, where we pay a high electricity bill, yet we struggle to have a constant of about 5 hours. Meanwhile, the pay here is low, but the light is steady and constant, so who gains? Beyond the hype—"I am living in the city"—is the city meeting your crucial needs? Of course, I am not encouraging people to come and live in a rural environment; it has its own disadvantage, though, but talking about productivity, I can say that I am gaining a lot. This does not mean I wish to continue here after my service year, lol.

In the aspect of business, the electricity supply has saved the community members from buying fuel daily, thereby allowing them to focus on their business growth only. It is in this area I got to understand that electricity is a major factor in business growth. Its effect has caused the cost price of some foodstuff to be cheaper because we have a way of preserving them effortlessly.

The noise and air pollution from generators are not heard in this environment compared to the urban sector; this is why the crops and environment are healthy.

Yes! I was deployed to a rural community, but I am productive. How about you?
