Planting Seeds, Potatopalooza Continued, Tobacco Transplants, Filling The Gap, Clearing Path - Wednesday

in Homesteading19 days ago

Nice sunny morning after the chilly start which meant I wasn't out in the garden till a bit later, once it warmed up. My first task for the day was to get more seeds in the ground. I filled in the last two rows in the pole garden with pole beans (what the garden was built for) and then sunflowers. I love the Fortex beans and I'm curious about the sunseed sunflowers as I haven't grown them before.

Next was to work on the red Nordland potatoes. I hauled them out to the greenhouse door where I set the stack and then began pulling sprouts from the spuds. I got a tub full and went and planted a row.

The sprouted tendrils got wrapped into loops then stuffed into the ground with the tops showing.

Then I finished picking the tendrils off and had another full tub. I planted them all at one foot spacing and the 2 shorter rows managed 34 each and the longer row had 50.

This gets me to about 420 spots planted with potatoes.

The tips sticking up into the sky to get sunlight and force the growth to begin.

I still have a crate of spuds that need to get planted and I am going to put in 40 more spots in the upper garden.

The greenhouse had a slew of volunteer tobacco plants which I spent time over the afternoon moving to the main garden.

The ends of most rows got one planted and then spaced out through the potato rows I stuck some in. I need to get marigold seeds in randomly around the garden as well to help cover more.

With most rows in the garden planted I had to get the irrigation turned on and I let all the zones run. Thankfully I was out there as there was a few holes and this one complete cut of a line. I did a live fix and got a bit wet but it is good now.

After getting both boys from school I headed out to the Tardis to fill in the gaps. I had to move everything back from the base then I laid the fence out to get the right length and cut it to size.

I rolled the fence up and then stuffed it under the side. It worked perfectly as it pressed up and down and filled the gap perfectly. It allows air flow but no birds can get under it now to lay eggs.

The other side went in just as fast and I made sure to fill the fork lift slots as well with foam. Maybe now we will get more eggs from the birds since they won't be able to hide them as easily.

In order to move the treadmill from studio B I have to have room to get my truck up there. That meant I had to move a bunch of stuff out of the driving path. I managed to make enough space around the garden but have to figure out if I will be able to get it out of studio B and into studio A... At least it folds up to make it a bit smaller...

I had @stryeyz stop for food on the way home then we had our farm sitter stop by for a once over. I got my new Arduino board and spent time running back and forth to the coop trying to get the opener to work right. I am removing the web server from the code and trying to make it super simple so it will just work. I only need reliability now not fancy.

Today I have to go to the upper garden and get it prepped and maybe planted, boys to and from school, coop door working right, the display card comes today that I will play with some, PDC is on mid day, Kraken play in the evening, I may try transplanting cabbage from the greenhouse to the garden, then I will figure out something for dinner this evening.
