During the spring and summer, the gnats come out in force and are relentless. They hang right around my face, and over time eventually find a way to get into my eyes. Usually ends up with me going to find a sink and a mirror and trying to flush a dead gnat out of the corner of my eye. Worst comes to worst I have to use a q-tip and get it out of my eye.
I have tried wearing sun glasses that are a tight fit, but still they find a way to get to my precious eye juices. Even bought some goggle like glasses, but the little air vents on the side they could still get in.
Dealing with them and fishing them out of my eyes gets tiring quick, and honestly for the first year on the farm I was unsure of how I would be able to keep dealing with them while working.
It may look peaceful in the above picture, but there are thousands of little gnats flying around if I stand still for too long. They are attracted to my the exhale of my breath and sweat I am guessing. They are relentless...
Wearing my head net I can put my hat on over it.
The head nets even come with a nice little carrying bag.
These are so precious to me, I keep extras around the house. Sometimes they get ruined. Awhile back a caterpillar fell on my head while clearing trees and it left spines all in the netting. So had to toss it.
I guess these things are marketed to keep mosqiutos away, but I find them the most useful against gnats.
Not much can get through these, besides the pollen in the spring.. lol
But indeed I am thankful for finding these head nets, now I can work without worrying about bugs getting into my eyes.
I can well imagine that really tight glasses are then uncomfortable to wear and you sweat at work -your vision decreases...
I've also seen these nets in larger sizes, so that you can wear them over a hat. the distance between the net and the skin could make them more comfortable to wear, but also prevent mosquitoes from biting through the net when it's next to the skin.😉
Wearing glasses did not last long. At one point I tried wearing swimming goggles but that did not work out either. Lol
Oh cool. Mine is kind of small to fit a hat in it. Maybe I can get some of these bigger ones.
I was just thinking about wearing the hat inside and found in comments 😁
if you only need to protect your eyes why not use one of those paintball goggles or ski goggles ..
If there are any vent holes they will find a way in.
A more than effective solution, my friend, so you can work with more peace of mind.
indeed. I really needed a solution.
This is a brilliant idea, and I wonder why we don't have the nets here.

.This would have come in handy when I was camping a few weeks ago. The bugs were relentless.
Ah yeah I would for sure bring them for camping
Haha, you look really cool wearing this head net. It looks quite similar to the beekeeper's veil.
Hehe yeah sometimes when people see me wearing it they think I'm a bee keeper.
Haha I might need one of those for out in the dog park. Not gnats but skeetos thick enough to carry a person away! Solid acquisition for someone working their own homestead!
Oh man yeah I would get one for sure then.
Yep. Never leave the farmhouse without it
And such a fashion statement too...
Indeed. Rather look silly than getting gnats in my eye though.
Does it keep the no see ems out too?
My dad has a hat like that with the netting for when he mows the lawn and he loves it. A solid addition for you!
Ah nice yeah I wear it too when I mow sometimes. Keeps things that may hit me in the face while mowing out of the way
Ah yes, good for that too!
I never thought gnats could be such a problem. Good solution!
Yeah they can be some annoying buggers
Yeah, it's a good solution for you to work in peace... and it also protects your eyes.
So true. I can work much better with this protection.
It fits you, especially with that smile, @solominer! I didn't realize that gnats are a problem. I seldom encounter them!

Hehe yeah. Maybe it's a regional thing.
It is a great ally since you can carry out your activities without thinking about the mosquitoes and the annoyance they generate.
Luckily the mosquitos are not much of an issue. But the gnats sure are.
I wish I had known, years ago when I did work outside, that these things existed! I don't do much outside work now, but they would have come in handy once upon a time! 😉
I wish I knew about it way earlier too. First year here did not have a good solution.
Now all that's missing are the bees!
Hah I got a whole suit just for that

Your idea is brilliant in dealing with pesky gnats. Thank you for sharing this great tip, it's very useful.
Yeah they are quite annoying. Glad you liked my tip
Never thought about using one of these in a different way than working with bees but it makes so much sense to have it around all the time!
Yeah having this gnat hat really helps me out.
Honestly I would be worried about a stinger getting through this netting.
Australia's solution:
(source: MS Copilot)
You could also try cigars.
Both methods are much more fashionable than your net... Probably not as effective, though...
Lol.. luckily my solution works pretty well
At first glance, it seems that it will be used only to protect from bees, but this simple net can be useful for many other purposes as well. Nice blog! :)
Indeed many uses
Have you tried some kind of spray or scent to keep them away, man? I read online that they stay away from the smell of coffee.
Yeah I have. It does not deter them. Only stops biting bugs mostly.
Ah I see, not to efficient. I'm sorry about that :/
This is good. I definitely need to get one before my next camping trip. This is usually the thing you tell yourself you wish you had bought when you are already deep on the trail and feeling the bites accumulating haha
Yeah this thing is a life saver for outdoor trips.
Hah yeah you will wish you had it.
Mosquitos are so damn annoying! Good call on the head net haha! Didn't even know they existed!
They are pretty annoying. But mostly the gnats is the issue here for me.
Skin So Soft...👍
It really works. Smells great too.
None of that bug spray poison for me. 😳
That stuff keeps gnats away? Hmm okay I'll have to look into it. So far only the netting has helped.
May I know, what are gnats? Are they living things? I do not know about them at all.
Of course, you have really found the solution to their problems.
They are small little flying bugs. A little bigger than a flea.
Uuh... I see, so they just fly around getting into people's eyes or what?
