I Want to Grow into Adulthood but my Mother always sees me like that Small Kid: The Reason I Left Home for my First Adventure in Making a Living

in Bee a Better You2 years ago (edited)

I had a conversation with my mom some years back precisely in 2007 and I told her that I'm tired of staying in Port Harcourt City, Nigeria and I need to fend for myself and start paying my bills. This is the praying of some parents whose son's are still behaving like kids in their 20s. My mom gave me the shocking answers of my life 'what do you know about taking care of yourself' and who told you that we're tired of teaching you the best way to live your life. I believe that her answers came as a result of my reserve nature, not knowing that have been exposed to several facets of life.

Life is in Stages and Men are in Sizes
There's this saying that maturity is not in the number of years you've spent on planet earth. This saying is actually true in the sense that a young man can be in his 40s and still act like a baby, while a guy in his early 20s could be more matured in thinking meaningful decisions that'll be respected by all. This saying also fits in advise to unmarried people and it's usually stressed that you shouldn't consider a man or lady for marriage just because of their age, but because of their level of handling real life situations. Most marriages are failing because most couples are not ready to face the fact of real life challenges. A young lady who's always saying take me to this fast food or the other during courtship should also know that there's house chores and other things to take care of.
Like the subtopics says, life is in Stages and Men are in sizes. Every young man today wants to get rich without making any efforts. They constantly admire rich personalities in the society and desire to be like them irrespective of the way it comes whether through ritual killings or kidnapping or money laundering. The people that are rich today were once poor and hopeless. Even the bible says that everything under the earth has time and season. If we want to succeed we'll follow life gradually and make serious efforts to attain our life's goals. Patience to many is suffering, but it should be noted that Patience is a virtue that will surely that you to your desired destination. To be a man they said is not a day's work, but I say that to be a man is not having penis alone, but the ability to identify and take responsibilities when they show up.

The Outcome of my Decision in 2007
There are numerous positive and negative experience that accompanied my decision to leave my comfort zone (home) and there's a lot of respect it has brought me today. Living home for the first time was not an easy job. First of all the little money dad gave to me before I embarked on my journey didn't last long. Immediately I reached my destination being Jos-Plateau State, Nigeria, I started by squatting in the church for some months before I was able to get my own apartment. The following things helped me to be who I am today they include:

  • learning to experience things both the hard and good ones. Experience they said is the best teacher, but I think learning from other peoples experiences is actually the best teacher. I learnt how to stay alone and make little savings that helped me to achieve some things today.
  • Becoming a financial manager and planner. Nobody told me or taught me how to save money for rainy days. My lack of money taught me that there's a time called rainy day. I joined a corporative society and saved a lot of money that I used to support my education and finally graduated some years back.
  • I bought a land from little savings.
  • I got married.
Finally, today my mom is so proud of me and was glad I left. Warriors are not made at home but in the battlefield, Lions are not known in their comfort zone but in the jungle. Are you still trying to be confused in taking the right decisions that'll help your future, it's time to break camp and move further to your destiny goals. Without my decisions and constant pressure to leave home, I'll not become whom I'm. Thanks for reading my story, hope it's inspiring also.
