Let's face it. Most people have short attention spans. If your blockchain's tech is complicated and it takes more than a few seconds to explain its unique value proposition, you're lost. Users just won't care.
People want simplicity.
Here are a few Tweets I found on the interwebs just now:
If you're trying to attract anybody to your app or blockchain, your unique value proposition needs to be simple, like bitcoin's value proposition.
Bitcoin is a digital, scarce, decentralized store of value away from governments, banks and corporations
People have heard of bitcoin and yet, in the grand scheme of things, it's tiny.
Let's look at this chart that compares the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market cap:
Each square in this visual representation is $100 million. on top is Bitcoin with $1.9 Trillion and on the very bottom is HIVE with a market cap of $120 million at the time of writing.
Do you see how big the difference is? You REALLY have to zoom in just to see the little red line representing HIVE, which is 0.0063% the size of bitcoin.
So why are many of us still trying to sell HIVE as "cheaper and faster than bitcoin"? This value proposition is old, it's used by dozens of different blockchains and is simply not that compelling, not to mention it pisses bitcoiners off.
Bitcoin is in the news.
You've got public figures like Michael Saylor, Jack Mallers and Saifedean Ammous all investing in, talking about and writing books about bitcoin.
We've got "bitcoin presidents" and there's even bitcoin hubs all over the world:
We've got Bitcoin beach in El Salvador, there's bitcoin Jungle in Costa Rica, Bitcoin Lake in Guatemala...
Bitcoin is the king of cryptocurrencies, whether you like it or not and no amount of "we're faster and cheaper" will dethrone Bitcoin's brand power, security layer, or cultural importance.
So instead of trying to fight bitcoin, why don't we talk about how HIVE is a complement for bitcoin?
The problem
Bitcoin is amazing, but it's slow and can be expensive to move around.
This is why The Lightning network was developed.
The Lightning network sort of works, but if you've ever asked someone who works with it every day, running a LN node is difficult, expensive and the fees it generates struggle to cover the costs of operating it. Ask @brianoflondon if you don't believe me.
If the incentives to run an LN node are so low, could it be possible that large corporations like River Financial could be the only ones running LN nodes and eventually require KYC or subscriptions to use their channels?
HIVE fixes this
HIVE is a great alternative to the Lightning network to move Bitcoin around. It's not the same, it's different and it adds a few more features than Lightning.
HIVE is a network that incentivizes node operators as well as users that add value through content creation and curation.
Node operators (witnesses) are incentivized to have their witness nodes up to date, say what they are doing for the protocol and interact with the community whether that's in a pseudonymous or semi-anonymous way.
Users are incentivized to create valuable content and to promote valuable content from others. We are also incentivized to downvote other users that are behaving in ways that undermine the integrity of the network.
The HIVE blockchain has a bunch of ways that allows users to create wealth, but could it be possible that the complexity in the tech make it hard for user adoption?
HIVE isn't competing against Bitcoin, it can complement Bitcoin by doing what Bitcoin doesn’t natively do: fast content interaction, social incentivization, feeless micro-rewarding, near real-time settlement at the app layer.
Could focusing on simple value proposition like this help accelerate adoption by businesses and other users?
I think there's a chance.
People that are much smarter and eloquent than me are coming up with ways of saying HIVE makes [insert name here] protocols more functional, and I think it's a much more compelling approach.
I'm going to promote https://onebitcoinclub.org/ more in the coming weeks.
You post about bitcoin, create valuable discussion and you can get rewarded by the community for it. 7 days later, you can withdraw part of your rewards in Bitcoin. Earn sats.
I'm sure the @vsc.network will help drive this concept home once it's implemented.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
That's a key component of persuasion - looking at people as they are and attempting to identify what might be compelling to them.
What we find value about Hive, might sound like esoteric arguments to someone else.
That's right. I think a huge use case of HIVE that many bitcoiners might find compelling is being able to move bitcoin around in a cheap and fast way all while incentivizing users. We need to find these use cases and talk about them with audiences that might find them interesting. Focusing on onboarding individual users is not enough to drive mass adoption in a saturated environment.
Fully agree
Yeah man. I think HIVE citizens did a great job onboarding hundreds of new users at Talent Land Guadalajara this week, but I also think we could have been more convincing as to why HIVE's technology exists. A cheaper, faster bitcoin just doesn't cut it.
If people even hear the word “wealth” they will be inspired to join Hive
That's been HIVE's selling point for a long time. I'm talking about promoting HIVE as an alternative to the Lightning network. The use case is much more compelling and could attract projects with thousands of users as opposed to individual users that trickle in with "Post, build wealth".
The other reason "post, build wealth" does not work is that it does not provide enough information to steer clear of Hive's crew who teach by punishment of how they do not want to see people to build and spend that wealth. That's a lot of why we can't retain ... we are down to perhaps 5K active users on "post, build wealth." Hive as Bitcoin complement fixes that, too. Come for the Bitcoin access; let One Bitcoin Club show the Hive posting ropes, and then send people forth without fear into community.
The simpler it is, the more people will understand and join us. We need more publicity like this. Otherwise, only very curious people like me will remain among us 🤣🤣
That's the thing, maybe HIVE is a protocol better suited to fix the problem of incentivizing L2 node operators and participants. There are many more users that know bitcoin already and HIVE excels at interacting with bitcoin. Have you even made a payment with v4v?
Not yet because, I didn't visit anywhere accept bitcoin. I'm not in Istanbul right now. But I'll try it asap. Your videos will be very helpful
„Earn on Hive, spend in Bitcoin.“ V4V.app
It's still confusing. Users need simplicity.
🤝🏻
My post is about HIVE's utility as underlying infrastructure for bitcoin. I appreciate your comment, but I think it's slightly off-topic.
I agree!
Maybe because for "some" it is - Hive or nothing ? Out of my point of view it would need an open mind to see that we have to come together for this and not separate.
Watching what's happening all around the blue ball for a long time already, we haven't gotten there yet. The ego-selfish ego is much to much conditioned into humans education.
A decentralized blockchain could be soooo much more, even change completely the way of civilizations for the better, but again, it would need some personal work on the own mind set... and that's hard work!
For now: It is good to have dreams ! #justSaying
Tribalism is a problem.
People fail to see that blockchain technology is not a single winner takes all and everybody else disappears. Many chains can work together to come up solutions that are user friendly.
Sure your right, i agree totally... just tell the tribalish trapped! :smirk:
It's hard to compete with Bitcoin, but Hive's main issue may just be lack of exposure. We could try to make it the place to talk about crypto, whilst earning it. The other social platforms tend to be owned by big corporations that the crypto crowd ought to be wary of. There's Mastodon, but people tend to be crypto-sceptical there.
I still haven't actually done and BTC/Lightning spending via V4V, but I will look out for opportunities.
Hive also has !BEER
You're missing out! It's easy, fast and it's a real world application of this amazing tech. Try it out some day.
My point is HIVE doesn't need to compete with bitcoin, we can embrace bitcoin and show projects how the HIVE protocol is good at moving BTC around and even has a built-in incentive structure for node operators and participants.
Does Bitcoin even offer what Hive does? The world needs a blockchain social platform.
Bitcoin sort of has NOSTR, I've plaid with it somewhat, but from what I've been able to gather, you can't earn from NOSTR unless someone sends you sats from their account.
HIVE has a much more robust system for sharing block rewards, but it's not as well known as Bitcoin.

Hi @alex-rourke
I think I get it.
I see what you see, especially with something like Dash, which is almost as old as Bitcoin, and does everything faster, cheaper, and more private to Bitcoin.
Yet Dash languishes in obscurity.
I think there is only one bitcoin, and while it isn't perfect, it's still bitcoin, so working with Bitcoin makes much more sense then against Bitcoin.
Hive should not repeat the mistakes of all those dead coins Bitcoin Black, Bitcoin Green, Bitcoin Gold, etc
As you have said, many coins have died trying to replace bitcoin.
There is no need for anymore coins to die on that hill.
Yup. Bitcoin and Hive serve two very different purposes.
I always describe Hive as a censorship-resistant social media platform, especially to people who are complaining of being shadow-banned or censored from Web 2.0.
We can thank smartphones, Instagram, and TikTok for that!
