Hive FPL Head to Head League GW16 Previews

Welcome back to another round of FPL games on Hive.

GW15 saw a few players fail to put up big scores as a result of the postponed Merseyside Derby and after Liverpool struggled against Girona in midweek, you wonder if that unexpected delay might have broken their momentum? We'll see.

The big news in FPL more generally was the announcement of the 'mystery chip' a new addition to this season's game. You can read full details of the Assistant Manager feature on the link below which becomes available to use from GW24 onwards. We'll do a bit more analysis of it closer to the time.

Into the matches and players to watch for what looks likely to be a high scoring game week!

No early kick-off this week but a couple of key games at 3pm on Saturday. You'd fancy Arsenal to beat struggling Everton fairly comfortably at home but if there is a side that looks better equiped to meet the set-piece threat the Gunners currently pose then it's likely to be a Sean Dyche team.

Saka (MID) is Mr consistent for FPL managers but is he the man to captain this week? Unlike his midfield rivals Salah and Palmer who have been the highest point scorers in a GW on 3 and 2 occasions respectively this season, Saka is yet to have that really monster points haul.

What Everton do have is 4 clean sheets from their last 5 fixtures although the odd match out in that regard was 4-0 defeat on the road. Given that their total xG for the season is lower than any other side then if you are looking at bringing in any of their players it would surely be a defender. That being said, you might want to wait until after Christmas to make that move with matches against City and Chelsea to follow.

Again, you'd back Liverpool to win this one but it's not necessarily going to be easy. The postponement against Everton did at least give the league leaders a rest which given their current schedule should put FPL managers who've invested in Salah (MID) at ease about his inclusion.

Otherwise, picking which Liverpool players to select in your squad is becoming increasingly difficult. Diaz (MID) has started only 2 of the last 5 league matches and while Gakpo (MID) has started the last 3, he's been subbed off around the hour mark - squad rotation is not an FPL manager's friend!

Iwobi (MID) has already equalled his best goals return in a season with 5 this year. How Arsenal would love for a few of their old boys to do a job on Liverpool in much the same way as they did to them last weekend.

Screenshot 2024-12-13 at 07.37.43.png

Ruud's reign has started well at Leicester who will be hoping that the new manager bounce they are experiencing will lead them through to January.

Worth bearing in mind that the Foxes did very little business in the transfer window in the summer given the threat of a large points deduction hanging over them. Don't be surprised to see them far more active this time around in a bid to secure their Premier League status.

Newcastle however will be a tough opponents especially at home. The triumvirate of attackers that Newcastle have in Isak (FWD), Gordon (MID) and former Leicester man Barnes (MID) would all be good bets to get attacking returns against a team that has only kept one clean sheet in the league this season.

Screenshot 2024-12-13 at 07.37.51.png

A massive game at the bottom. Ipswich continue to look competitive in most games but can't translate that into regular points. Meanwhile, Wolves keep scoring plenty of goals but are leakier than a sieve at the back.

That being the case then any of the bargain forwards appearing in this match such as Cunha (FWD), Strand-Larsson (FWD) and Delap (FWD) would be good bets for points.

If you are tempted by a defender then it should be one who will bring in attacking returns. Ait-Nouri (DEF) is a continual threat for Wolves while Davis (DEF) for Ipswich has a higher expected goal assists in the last 4 games than any other defender in the game.

Despite their patchy form of late, both these sides know that a win in this match would catapult them into the top 4.

The problem for Forest this season has been scoring goals and collecting points at home. They've scored just 8 in their 7 league matches at the City Ground so far only relegation candidates Palace, Ipswich and Southampton have scored fewer.

Meanwhile for Villa, it's their away form that's been particularly concerning. They've conceded 14 goals in their 7 trips away in the league so far. However, it is worth noting that they've visited the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs in that time. Arresting that poor form on the road would be a major step towards them qualifying for the Champions League again next year.

With Watkins (FWD) carrying a knock, is this the moment for Duran (FWD) to establish himself as a starter? 5 goals from just 405 minutes of Premier League play this season suggests that if he can then he'll be well worth a look at just £5.8 mil.

Screenshot 2024-12-13 at 07.38.06.png

Weirdly both sets of supporters regard this as a bit of a derby. No 2 places are ever very far away from each other in little old England but you'd not exactly describe Brighton and Palace as neighbours.

On current form and recent history it might be worth backing this game to be a draw. Palace have drawn 7 games in the league, more than anyone else so far this season, including 4 of their last 6 in the league while Brighton aren't far behind with 6 draws this year. These 2 sides have also played out a stalemate in 4 out of the last 5 times they've met, the only exception being Brighton's 4-1 victory in the equivalent fixture back in February.

Palace are massively underperforming their xG this season and of course we know that Brighton will offer up some chances. Whether the likes of Mateta (FWD) and Eze (MID) can take them remains to be seen.

Screenshot 2024-12-13 at 07.38.16.png

What an absolutely brilliant game this could be. Both sides are having problems on and off the pitch and the only tonic to that (as we've seen with Chelsea this year) is to win. United will probably fancy their chances of that considering how poor City have been of late not to mention their pretty decent record in this fixture.

Amorim has continued to chop and change his side, suggesting that he'll be using this first half season in charge to give everyone a chance to stake a claim going forward. The player who looks to have made most headway in that regard is Diallo (MID) who has provided an assist in every game he's started in the league under Amorim. At £5.1mil his ownership has already grown to over 7%.

For City, other than that 4-0 defeat to Spurs, their home form has remained strong despite their recent struggles. KDB (MID) played the full 90mins in Turin this week so I'd be surprised if he starts this game too. By the same token, Foden (MID) has been an unused substitute in City's last 3 matches. The England midfield recorded 230 FPL points last season, he's managed just 19 so far this year, a fall from grace that mirrors that of his side more generally.

Screenshot 2024-12-14 at 07.22.07.png

The timing of some of the games this week is a bit odd including 2 x 7pm Sunday kickoffs, however, this West London derby should brighten up your evening with a few goals in it!

Brentford have the best home form in the league and the 2nd worst away form this season. However, despite Chelsea's good league position, their form at Stamford Bridge remains patchy as has been the case for some time now.

Over the last 3 GWs Palmer (MID) leads the ICT rankings on goal threat and is 3rd in regards creativity so you'd fancy that he'll add to his tally of 18 goal involvements so far this season.

The other player making waves for Chelsea at present is Enzo (MID) who has a goal involvement in all of his last 5 league appearances. In the best part of 2 years at Chelsea the 100 million pound man had just 8 goal involvements in the Premier League, he's now got 6 in the last month! At just £5mil he's definitely worth a gamble even if he's not able to maintain this purple patch.

Screenshot 2024-12-14 at 07.33.08.png

2 stubborn and of late much criticised managers go head to head in a match that might go towards determining their futures. Any side around the bottom of the league will be looking at the January transfer window as a possibility to change things up.

Big Ange has said he intends to go even more attacking so expect some chances at least in this match although anyone who saw Spurs play midweek will have noted that they didn't look particularly confident and they were quite leggy at times.

Probably the one player to target from Spurs at the moment is Forster (GK). So far this season it's been difficult to get a back-up budget keeper who regularly plays but with Vicario's long term injury, Forster looks likely to get an extended run in the team. He might not get you many clean sheet bonuses but he is racking up the saves, 16 of them in his last 3 league matches.

Screenshot 2024-12-14 at 07.43.55.png

Bournemouth have made the Vitality Stadium a real fortress of late and depending on how other results fall across the weekend, this game will give them a chance to establish themselves in the European spots, a significant achievement for this incredible club.

With a decent run of fixtures to come, having one or two Cherries in your side for the foreseeable future looks like a decent route to take but who should you go with?

Kerkez (DEF) at the back looks good for both attacking and defensive returns and at £4.5mil is very reasonably priced as an automatic starter.

Upfront it's harder. Semenyo (MID) who started the season so strongly has no goal involvement in the last 5 weeks. Evanilson's (FWD) underlying stats in regards both threat and xG look really good but he's not quite found his scoring boots since arriving in English football. However with just 4.6% ownership he'd be a great differential to have if he does start to turn those numbers into points!

Good luck to me because I'm going to need it 😭

So far, my luck seems to be changing. Let's hope that can continue!

Who do you need to get points?

Hey @kraken99, here is a little bit of BEER from @talesfrmthecrypt for you. Enjoy it!

Did you know that <a href='https://dcity.io/cityyou can use BEER at dCity game to buy cards to rule the world.

Liverpool's match postponement really botched my points

I wonder how it'll go this time

Yeah that screwed a lot of people. Still means a double GW to come for Salah ...

!BEER

This first match was still wonderful.
10 points from him...

I might get Jota back as he's out of injury.

18 points overall and I still have 8 players to play...

Let's see

I just don't trust Jota to stay fit and Liverpool have so many options upfront, the only guaranteed starter is Salah

Hey @seki1, here is a little bit of BEER from @talesfrmthecrypt for you. Enjoy it!

Do you want to win SOME BEER together with your friends and draw the BEERKING.

Liverpool scuppered me last week, seems this week at 4pm it is not much better!

Who's let you down this week?
