The Spanish blackout from my experience

The "great Spanish blackout" happened yesterday while I was at one celebration. It is the celebration that is held every year on the second Monday after Easter. I played with the choir, as we do every year, under the circumstances that are not the best for a performance. Very strong sun, wind that wants to blow away the musicians' scores (not mine as I play from the tablet) and some technical issues. At the beginning of one song, the person who was on charge to switch on the volume of the piano didn't do it on time so my piano, although I played it, didn't sound. I received the killing gaze of the director hahaha, so I explained him later it was not my fault that the speakers remained in silence.

At that moment I thought that it was the biggest technical problem that could happen that day, until the power went off some 20 minutes later. As there was a big tent where food and drinks were served and prepared, they had an electricity generator powered by a fuel engine. Nice of them to give us their electricity to continue the event without long interruptions. Traditional music and dances from this area followed our performance, I took a few photos and some videos, still not knowing anything about the issues the whole country faced.

Probably we realized that something is happening when neither me or my son had data on our phones. No phone network either...? Probably as we were at that hill El Captivador.

We went to the tent for the lunch, with little appetite as we started to worry a bit. People were telling that half of the Europe lost electricity, that it can be a cyber attack etc. When people don't have enough information, assumptions and fake news are easily propagated from mouth to mouth. Cut off from the world, information-wise, I also started to worry. Instead of having lunch I sit in the car and found a radio station to hear if there are any news. The only station I caught said that they didn't know what was happening, but that it affected Spain, Portugal, part of France and maybe some European countries, that people stayed trapped in trains, subway, and elevators, that there were no traffic lights in the cities, that you can't buy things in the supermarket or fuel at gas stations, also that we should not move around by car if it is not especially important. They were mentioning emergency levels. Oh, we had our flight from Alicante the very next morning (today) and my son had to go back to Valencia.

I can't deny that many negative thoughts came to my mind. Having the experience of some events from the past that seem surrealist, but they happened, I couldn't stay calm and act as if everything was normal. I decided not the stay for my afternoon lessons; no way to let the students know, I just wrote a message on a piece or a paper to one student and let it attached to his car's windshield. The security of ourselves was the most important, so I didn't let my son to go to Valencia in the way it was planned and already paid. Instead, we headed home. I felt calmer if he was traveling with me and by me, even though it was in the opposite direction that he needed. Once at home and reunited with my husband we could talk about the things and bring decisions what our son could do and what we will do with our trip to Austria.

Later in the afternoon/evening, the electricity slowly started to arrive to some parts of Spain. The areas on north got help from France and we, on the south from Morocco. It didn't mean everyone had the luck to get back the power but we were among the lucky ones. We got our backpacks ready, we checked in our flights (something we couldn't do without internet and electricity), I cleaned up a bit the apartment and we went to sleep for 4 hours.

About the reasons why this huge electricity failure happened, I still don't know as I had to focus on packing our bags when the electricity arrived instead of checking the news, but it's coming here, to Hive España community as this for sure was something that affects the country we live in.

El "gran apagón" ocurrió ayer mientras estaba en una celebración. Es la fiesta que se celebra cada año el segundo lunes después de Pascua. Toqué con el coro, como todos los años, en circunstancias desfavorables para una actuación: un sol muy fuerte, un viento que se llevaba las partituras de los músicos (no las mías, ya que toco desde la tableta) y algunos problemas técnicos. Al principio de una canción, la persona encargada de subir el volumen del piano no lo hizo a tiempo, así que mi piano, aunque lo toqué, no sonó. El director me "mató" con la mirada, jajaja, así que después le expliqué que no era culpa mía que el altavoz se quedara en silencio. En ese momento pensé que era el mayor problema técnico que podía pasar ese día, hasta que se fue la luz unos 20 minutos después. Como había una gran carpa donde se servían y preparaban comida y bebida, tenían un generador eléctrico alimentado por un motor de gasolina. Qué amables de su parte darnos su electricidad para que el evento pudiera continuar sin largas interrupciones. Música y bailes tradicionales de la zona acompañaron nuestra actuación. Tomé algunas fotos y videos, aún sin saber nada sobre los problemas que enfrentaba todo el país.
Probablemente nos dimos cuenta de que algo estaba pasando cuando ni mi hijo ni yo teníamos datos en nuestros teléfonos. ¿Tampoco señal...? Probablemente porque estábamos en el cerro El Captivador.

Fuimos a la carpa a almorzar, con poco apetito, pues empezábamos a preocuparnos un poco. La gente decía que media Europa se había quedado sin electricidad, que podía ser un ciberataque, etc. Cuando la gente no tiene suficiente información, las suposiciones y las noticias falsas se propagan fácilmente de boca en boca. Desconectado de la información, yo también empecé a preocuparme. En lugar de almorzar, me senté en el coche y busqué una emisora ​​de radio para escuchar si había alguna noticia. La única emisora ​​que oí decía que no sabían qué estaba pasando, pero que afectaba a España, Portugal, parte de Francia y quizás a algunos países europeos. Que había gente atrapada en trenes, metro y ascensores, que no Iban los semáforos en las ciudades, que no se podía comprar en el supermercado ni repostar en las gasolineras, y que no debíamos desplazarnos en coche si no era especialmente importante. Mencionaban los niveles de emergencia. Ah, teníamos nuestro vuelo desde Alicante a la mañana siguiente (hoy) y mi hijo tenía que volver a Valencia.

No puedo negar que me vinieron muchos pensamientos negativos. Habiendo vivido algunos sucesos del pasado que parecen surrealistas, pero que ocurrieron, no pude mantener la calma y actuar como si todo fuera normal. Decidí no quedarme a dar clase por la tarde; no había forma de avisarles a los alumnos; simplemente escribí un mensaje en un papel a un alumno y lo pegué en el parabrisas de su coche. Nuestra seguridad era lo más importante, así que no dejé que mi hijo fuera a Valencia como estaba planeado y ya pagado. En lugar de eso, volvimos a casa. Me sentí más tranquila si viajaba conmigo y a mi lado, aunque fuera en la dirección opuesta a la que necesitaba. Una vez en casa y reunidos con mi marido, pudimos hablar de todo y tomar decisiones sobre qué podía hacer nuestro hijo y qué haríamos nosotros con nuestro viaje a Austria.

Por la tarde/noche, la electricidad empezó a llegar poco a poco a algunas partes de España. Las zonas del norte recibieron ayuda de Francia y nosotros, las del sur, de Marruecos. No todos tuvimos la suerte de recuperar la electricidad, pero fuimos de los afortunados. Preparamos nuestras mochilas, facturamos nuestros vuelos (algo que no podíamos hacer sin internet y electricidad), limpié un poco el apartamento y dormimos cuatro horas.

Si ven la siguiente maleta y la siguiente foto del avión, significa que logramos embarcar y estamos volando/llegando/o ya llegamos a nuestro destino.

Sobre los motivos por los cuales se produjo este gran corte eléctrico, aún no lo sé ya que tuve que centrarme en preparar las mochilad cuando llegó la electricidad en lugar de mirar las noticias, pero esto llega aquí, a la comunidad de Hive España, ya que esto fue algo que afecta mucho al país en el que vivimos.
