Free stuff at the dumpsters in Spain

It is something that I remember vividly from even our first period in Spain: Spaniards dumping perfectly good items at the dumpsters every day for others to take home. Where we first lived they cleaned our streets very well, every single day. So if you were to find some good stuff at the garbage bins, you had to be quick and find it at the right time because as soon as they started to clean, it would be picked up by the cleaning company and thrown in the dumpsters.

Lots of people hunting for good stuff

It's very rare to find something good at the dumpsters nowadays unless you are hunting during day time or get lucky when someone is just putting something good up there. We only saw two quite decent scratching posts in the past months, which we didn't take in because one was all wet as it was during rainy days, and the other was gone when we got back home. Otherwise we'd have taken a few of the scratching parts to upcycle them with new rope and create a new post with it.

Finding good furniture in our neighbourhood is rare nowadays, oh I forgot we also grabbed one garden chair in the first months we got here, which was ugly green but very convenient, especially back then as we only had the bad chairs oft he landlady in this home to sit on.

Luck was on our side again!

Last weekend, luck was on our side again after we left the supermarket to get into our car, right next to it was a dumpster and these shelves:

I assumed these were wall shelves and thought, damn we should take them, thinking my boyfriend would disagree as we have our storage space filled with the landlady's shtity furniture but to my surprise he said: "They are going with us, I don't know why yet, but we're taking them". Great!

It's a complete shelving unit

My boyfriend took the shelves to the storage space at first, to then discover it's a complete unit and explained what it looked like. I was so happy because I've been trying to find the perfect shelving unit for my office since the day I moved my desk to this room and can't find any unit that fits the height of the folders with administration in it. Every time we think we found something, it doesn't fit. Then we have a bunch of other stuff that I now put in plastic boxes as I don't have any place for it otherwise, which is quite annoying, this unit should solve some chaos.

Very instable

My boyfriend found out it was very instable and said we need to buy some stuff to support it. We went to the budget store and I proposed these metal corners, he first wanted to try something else but then later admited my idea was better and went back for these.

Work in progress

I was already so happy here because I knew it would solve lots of storage issues. The plastic and cardboard boxes with creative stuff also fit right under the lowest shelve which is great. Too bad it always turns out that whatever we buy/place here, it covers up the sockets (as you see on the right part).

The next day, I got around to fill some top shelves mostly, I wanted to put all the boxes with markers and pencils on a shelve too but thought it looked way too messy, so ended up putting them all in a cardboard box which is placed below the bottom shelve, in this case below Luna:

The current status is that I yet have to take in and see what I put where so the cats won't fool around and steal/bite in stuff because they love to steal stuff from my daughter's dollhouse as well, so I'm letting it sink in a bit while taking my time to fill the space properly. On top there are still some items that are going to be removed fully from this room as well as the bonsai tree my boyfriend bought some weeks ago.

Either way, I'm very pleased with this simple shelving unit, which only cost us a few euros to make it stable as it makes the room look so much cosier and organized. Grateful to whoever put it at the garbage!

Es algo que recuerdo muy bien desde nuestra primera estancia en España: los españoles tiraban cada día a los contenedores de basura artículos en perfecto estado para que otros se los llevaran a casa.
