Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 59 / Round 2 of the Hive Music Festival!

I have been very sick this week with a sore throat and coughing up phlegm, but let me sing a quick song before going back to recovering in bed… (My poor wife!)

Last week I played “Free Fallin’” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I explained that John Mayer did a fantastic, laid back, finger-picking styled cover of this song on acoustic guitar, and that now when I play the song, I am inspired by both versions and enjoy the mood change of the finger-picking verse strumming, so I tend to go back and forth…

Today, I would like to do another song that John Mayer covered (and hey, maybe next week I can find a third and make it a theme for this cycle! Hahaha). This week I am talking about “Message in a Bottle” by Sting and the Police. I have always found the mix of Police songs to be a bit weird, with Sting’s vocals not nearly loud enough in my opinion – check the original and see what you think?

Well, the quality and special vibe of the song is undeniable, and I remember John Mayer covering it in a concert in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama quite early in his career… let me see if I can find it. Ah here’s a recording without video, but it still sounds like he was completely solo and acoustic (while the rest of the band was taking a break?) and sounds amazing – a good inspiration for me when playing solo!

To be honest, there’s something about this song that makes me just enjoy trying to add more energy by strumming out the rapid chord changes instead of the very recognisable riff. This may seem strange as I love to finger-pick, but for this song – I just love to give it 100% and emphasize the rhythm of it. I find playing solo, it is often my style to emphasize a simple rhythm to make up for the fact that there is no drummer. It is often strange for me to listen to the original song after a while, and realise it is often a more subtle understated rhythm than I do, but that makes more sense with a full band including drums and bass.

He estado muy enfermo esta semana con dolor de garganta y tos con flema, pero déjenme cantar una canción rápida antes de volver a recuperarme en la cama… (¡Mi pobre esposa!)

La semana pasada puse “Free Fallin’” de Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
