The other day, we ran out of drinking water
El otro día, nos quedamos sin agua potable.
Back to the days when we lived in Salento, department of Quindío, we could drink fresh paramo water directly from the tap. In the capital, Armenia, that’s not an option.
Since we moved, almost two months ago, an obligatory part of our income goes to mineral water. But, that morning, I drank the last glass of it.
When Rafael went to the store, the water had risen in price ... again.
(Not just again, but again again). So Rafael returned empty-handed and with the decision to boil the tap water.
And that was fine. The water from the tube tastes a little strange. Like chlorine, or ... something. But it doesn't really matter.

Desde que nos mudamos, hace ya casi dos meses, parte obligatoria de nuestros ingresos se va en agua mineral. Pero, esa mañana, yo bebí el último vaso.
Cuando Rafael salió a la tienda, el agua había aumentado de precio… otra vez. (No solo otra vez, sino otra otra vez). Así que Rafael volvió con las manos vacías y con la decisión de hervir el agua del tubo.
Y estaba bien. El agua del tubo sabe un poco extraña. Como a cloro, o a… algo. Pero no importa realmente.
Later, Rafael thought it was time to trim the banana trees in the backyard so that the new clusters would grow chubby and pretty. And to make more room for the garden we are about to start.
And then... a brilliant idea came to my mind.
And ... that's what I'll talk about today.
Más tarde, Rafael decidió que era momento de podar las matas de banano del jardín para que los nuevos racimos crecieran gorditos y bonitos. Y para tener más espacio para el huerto que estamos por comenzar.

How to get fresh water out of banana trees
Cómo sacar agua fresca del banano (O cómo Rafael y Ney se mantienen hidratados sin sucumbir ante los precios locos de la cuarentena)
It’s not our first time doing this.
Before this house, we lived on a majestic farm that also had banana trees everywhere.
One day, I remembered a video that I saw, approximately, 1,000 years ago. Or something like that.
It was a group of Asian boys —Vietnameses, perhaps? Maybe Thais?— who cut down a banana tree, which had already borne fruit, made a hole in it, covered it with plastic wrap and, the three days later, returned with some straws and drank that exquisite, and I will quote myself, "banana juice !!!!!! what!!! natural banana juice!!!"
No es la primera vez que lo hacemos.
Antes de esta casa, vivíamos en una finca majestuosa que, también, tenía bananos por doquier.
Un día, recordé un video que había visto hace, aproximadamente, 1000 años. O parecido.
Era un grupo de chicos asiáticos —vietnamitas, quizás? Tal vez tailandeses?— que talaban un árbol de banano, que ya había dado fruto, realizaban un agujero en él, lo tapaban con papel film y, a los tres días, regresaban con unos pitillos (pajillas) y bebían ese exquisito, y me citaré a mí misma, “jugo de banano!!!!!! qué!!! jugo de banano natural!!!”
So, with a banana tree from the farm, we decided to do it.
We cut it down, we cut a hole in it, we covered it up, we returned after three days and, I will quote myself again "what a thrill! we will drink natural banana juice!!! oh, this is gonna be awesome!!! "
...It was water.
Not juice at all. Just water.
A little more ... earthy flavored, maybe? Like river water. And not totally transparent but, actually, water.
Pure and divine water.
So, going back to our current house, that's what we did this time.

We chose the tree what would give us the water and we dug the hole.

We covered it with plastic wrap. This is for bugs not to dive into our water.

And we tied it really tight. We used plastic tape but you could use a hair tie or something like that. I just didn't have one on hand.

There have been two experiences that have led me to the point of actually being desperate for water.

Han sido dos experiencias las que me han llevado al extremo de desesperar por agua.
First one is the Dadá, the most important ceremony for the Wottüja.
It begins with a fast of three days - or one, it depends on you. I have always done one day - of Caapi and Tobacco.
Yes, Caapi and Tobacco. Nothing else. No food. No water.
Bathing is also not recommended to avoid recharging energy. So... that explains why it is the number one in my list, right?
My second Dadá was extremely hard for me.I was pregnant but didn't know it and the lack of water felt like agony. After the Dadá, you can drink water the next day, around midday, when the whole ritual is over. I will explain it better another time.

The second one is the Peyote ceremony.
During this one, there are four rounds of water: The water at midnight, the men's water, the women's water at dawn and the fourth water which is during the Temazcal.
Between tablespoon and tablespoon of Peyote, my mouth went dry and I needed the water. I truly, deeply, madly, needed it.
In my first ceremony, it didn't bother me as much. It didn't bother me at all, actually. But in the second one, when I already knew there were times for water, I despaired for those moments to come. But it was as if they never came. The minutes, the hours, stretched and lengthened as my mouth dried and I was just at the top of the medicine.
When it finally came around, it was like heaven. Or almost.
We could only take exactly what we were going to drink because nothing could be returned.
I took just a little bit of it, and after all the despair, it still felt like it was too much.
I had a really hard time passing it.
Funny, right?
Most like a nightmare.
Since that, the sacred character of water remains tattooed in my skin.

En esta, hay cuatro rondas de agua: El agüita de la medianoche, el agua de los hombres, el agua de las mujeres al amanecer y la cuarta agua en el Temazcal.
Entre cucharada y cucharada de Peyote, la boca se me secaba y yo necesitaba el agua. La necesitaba a gritos.

Solo podíamos tomar lo que nos fuésemos a tomar porque nada se podía devolver.
Yo agarraba poquito y, aún así, y después de todo el desespero, sentía que era demasiado.
Y me costaba pasarla.
Tan chistosa, ¿cierto?
Desde ese momento, tengo tatuado el carácter sagrado del agua en mi piel.

We collect it and strain the remaining trunks. I suggest using a coffee filter paper or a cheesecloth. I did that later.

And… water!Pure, fresh and divine.
This is the amount we got from the hole we dug. A liter or so I believe.

The trunk will keep providing water forever. At least, while the whole banano tree conglomeration remains alive. So, if you want to repeat the process, you totally can. Just remember to cover the hole with plastic film so bugs will not enter.
That way, you will, basically, have new water every single day.
And if you, in the other hand, want to stop the process, you need to cut the hole off the trunk.
La producción de agua seguirá por siempre. O, por lo menos, mientras toda la familia de bananos siga viva. Así que, si quieren repetir el proceso para conseguir más agua, pueden hacerlo. Recuerden tapar el hueco, de nuevo, para que no entren insectos. De esa forma, tendrás agua nueva cada día.

Qué épico este post. No sabía nada de esto, ni tampoco de las privaciones del Dadá y el Peyote, las tendré en cuenta si me toca asistir a alguna de esas ceremonias. Maravilloso! Yo también le rezo al agua que tomo, aunque he relajado bastante eso últimamente; me recordaste lo importante que es. No he usado hasta ahora el cuarzo pero lo he estado pensado, especialmente porque ya estamos purificando agua de chorro en la casa y quiero hacerlo con luz solar para mi consumo personal (seis horas al sol es suficiente, según la Organización Mundial de la Salud).

Sí, los rayos UV arrasan con las impurezas y los microbios. Yo ya sabía algo sobre eso porque una de las prácticas alternas al Sungazing es cargar el agua con luz solar y consumirla, pero sólo ahora fue que descubrí que es un método aceptado por la OMS.
Yo aún no he pintado con agua, pero sí he aliviado uffff un montón de bloqueos, jajaja. Es maravilloso confirmar una y otra vez el poder de la vibración en todo lo que nos rodea!

Yes, many of the mountain people here on the Thai Burmese border know this and show me also - they have about 5 months of every year with NO RAIN AT ALL during the monsoonal dry season, and most live in forest dwellings with no tap water. WE also NEVER drink tap water in Asia due to Hepatitis A.
