So today on the 23rd, the night is already longer than the day. Even though the sun is still warming, you can see that it is losing its power because it is lower on the horizon. A sign that the cold season is just around the corner.
Am 23. September beginnt hier offiziell der Herbst. Schon am 21. September war die sogenannte "Tag und Nacht Gleiche", der herbstliche Zeitpunkt im Jahr, an dem Tag und Nacht gleich lang sind.
Heute am 23. ist die Nacht also schon länger als der Tage. Auch wenn die Sonne noch wärmt, so sieht man doch, dass sie ihre Kraft verliert, weil sie niedriger am Horizont steht. Ein Zeichen, dass die kalte Jahreszeit vor der Türe steht.

Our ancestors celebrated the festival of MABON around this time. An autumn festival, a harvest festival and a festival of gratitude for all the fruits that the earth has given us.
Nowadays we always tend to fix something exactly on one day. In my personal opinion, however, we should not see it so precisely. All transitions in nature are fluid, and so I think, like many others, that Mabon was celebrated over several days in its time.
Unsere Vorfahren haben rund um diesen Zeitpunkt das Fest MABON gefeiert. Ein Herbstfest, ein Erntefest und ein Fest der Dankbarkeit für alles, was die Erde uns an Früchten geschenkt hat.
Wir tendieren heutzutage ja immer dazu etwas ganz genau auf einen Tag festzulegen. Meiner persönlichen Meinung nach sollte man das aber nicht so genau sehen. Alle Übergänge in der Natur sind fließend, und so denke ich wie viele andere auch, dass Mabon seinerzeit über mehrere Tage gefeiert wurde.

And so we also had not planned, but rather by chance, because the weather suited we have today chestnuts and "Kukuruz" (Styrian for corn) grilled over the open fire. It was also the inauguration of the new fire bowl that my brother-in-law had bought.
Wie auch immer das früher auch gewesen sein mag. Heutzutage verlieren wir den natürlichen Jahreskreislauf gerne aus den Augen. Und so hatten auch wir das nicht geplant, sondern eher zufällig, weil das Wetter passte haben wir heute Kastanien und "Kukuruz" (Steirisch für Mais) über dem offenen Feuer gegrillt. Es war auch zugleich die Einweihung der neuen Feuerschale, die mein Schwager gekauft hatte.

The corn (also called "Kukurruz" or "Sterzbam" in Austrian... Styrian?) We had pre-cooked, then you only have to grill it briefly. Then enjoyed with a little salt and butter.
Den Mais (Kukurruz oder Sterzbam auf Österreichisch... Steirisch?) hatten wir vorgekocht, dann muss man ihn nur kurz grillen. Danach mit etwas Salz und Butter genossen.

With the chestnuts ("Maroni") you have to cut the shell a little before roasting them in a pan with holes.
Bei den Kastanien (Maroni) muss man die Schale ein wenig einschneiden, bevor man sie in einer Pfanne mit Löchern röstet.

After roasting they still have to briefly in a pot with a damp cloth to tighten a little. Then - traditionally of course - in paper "Starniezel" (= bags or so? Oh, this Austrian language.....) , turned to a roll from old newspapers and there you can also immediately stow the shell remains again.
Nach dem Rösten müssen sie noch kurz in einen Topf mit feuchtem Tuch um ein wenig nachzuziehen. Dann - traditionell natürlich - in Papier "Starniezel" (= Tüten oder so? Ach, dieses Österreichisch.....) , gedreht aus alten Zeitungen und dort kann man auch gleich die Schalenreste wieder verstauen.

It was a really nice afternoon, from the youngest mouse to the oldest great-grandma, everyone enjoyed it. Open fire, that really has something grounding. Connecting. Also internally warming.
Es war ein wirklich schöner Nachmittag, von der jüngsten Maus bis zur ältesten Uroma hatten alle ihre Freude daran. Offenes Feuer, das hat wirklich etwas Erdendes. Verbindendes. Auch innerlich Wärmendes.

Towards evening I have then also looked for the first autumn decoration wich were stored in the basement. Of course, the little hedgehogs are always allowed to come out first. This is now the second time that I write here on HIVE about my autumn decoration. Maybe one or the other can remember the two little ones?
Gegen Abend habe ich dann auch noch die erste Herbst Dekoration aus dem Keller geholt. Natürlich dürfen die kleinen Igel immer als erstes heraus. Das ist jetzt schon das zweite mal, dass ich hier auf HIVE über meine Herbst Deko schreibe. Vielleicht kann sich der ein oder andere an die beiden kleinen erinnern?

Also the wooden owl found its place at the front door, hoping that it hangs high enough and out of reach for my sister's dog.
Auch die Holz Eule fand ihren Platz an der Eingangstüre, in der Hoffnung, dass sie für den Hund meiner Schwester hoch genug und unerreichbar hängt.

Finally, I carved a face into a small pumpkin for my mom. We had pumpkin soup that week and the shell was left over. So it was a good idea, even though we're still a long way from Halloween. Well, not so far again. Nevertheless, the pumpkin illuminated may now enchant her balcony a little :-)
Schließlich habe ich für meine Mom noch ein Gesicht in einen kleinen Kürbis geschnitzt. Es gab die Woche Kürbissuppe und die Hülle ist übrig geblieben. Da hat sich das doch angeboten, auch wenn wir noch weit von Halloween entfernt sind. Naja, so weit auch wieder nicht. Trotzdem darf der Kürbis beleuchtet jetzt ihren Balkon ein wenig verzaubern :-)

In the evening then the perfect time for a warming "Bohnschadlgulasch soup" (thick soup with bean pods from our garden and oh, do not ask me how to translate you this sausage cut into pieces from the Austrian LOL )
Abends war dann der perfekte Zeitpunkt für eine wärmende "Bohnschadlgulasch Suppe" (Dicke Suppe mit Bohnenschoten aus unserem Garten und ach, fragt mich nicht wie ich euch diese Wurst in Stücke geschnitten aus dem Österreichischen übersetzen soll LOL )
