Help me out here. Hand crank amd rock salt? How does that work? :D

Before the electric ice cream makers there was a manual hand crank cover over the maker. The maker itself was metal and was placed in bucket filled with ice and rock salt.Rock salt lowers the freezing point of the ice creating a colder environment around the ice cream. I seen this process in the 80's when my mother made homemade ice cream. I share this borrowed image.

Hahaha thx for the info, this is new to me but makes total sense with the cooling point even lower.
