Hairy Crab & Salmon Eggs.

Top of the morning to you! Hope everyone is having a decent day, weather is cracking here in Japan!
Today’s photos are of two of my favorite seafoods here in the land of the rising sun. All the way from Hokkaido(northern island of Japan), which in my humble opinion produces some of the best seafood on the planet. I would recommend almost any seafood from up there, especially in winter, when everything is fat and at its most juicy!

First is Kegani or hairy crab. It has a soft shell, and is extremely deceiving regarding the meat inside as it looks like it doesn’t carry much weight, especially when they curl up in a ball, they don’t look very big at all. I can’t get enough of crab, so I stupidly thought I could eat one by myself no problems.........the meat is rich, far more flavor than any crab or lobster I’ve eaten, and I couldn’t eat a whole one. Ramen aside, this is my number 1 favorite food. A kegani costs between ¥4000~¥10,000, depending on size and where it is from. If you love crustaceans, this HAS TO be on your bucket list.

To the side is Ikura or salmon eggs. Hokkaido is famous for salmon, and these little balls of goodness live up to the hype! Prices range from ¥5000~¥15000 per kilo. Be careful though, there are a lot of fakes out there.

😃So interesting. I’ve always heard that Hokkaido has the best seafood. Looks can be deceiving. Sure sounds delicious.

It's undoubtably the best in Japan, and I reckon in the world, but I haven't been to a lot of countries so it's a pretty bias opinion...... one day you'll have to get up there!

Haha! I believe you. I’ve seen friends who don’t eat “this” and “that” come back from Hokkaido saying they eat them now.
I sometimes miss the tropical climate (during winter) so much that I turn my eyes off prefectures up north. 😂
I'm not big on seafood but I’m convinced to take the trip. I’d love to go.

I thought you guys loved crabs? @bearmol has told me about them. An island girl not big on seafood!? You must be part of a very small minority. Hahaha. It’s beautiful up there, reminds me of NZ. The weather is cracking in summer. The vegetables and fruit are killer as well!

😆Haha! You’re right.@bearmol’s mom makes a special curry crab that makes me lick my ten fingers and almost toes if the juice falls low. @bearmol makes nice escoveitch fish and garlic shrimps. I eat some stuff but wouldn’t have like a craving for them, well... except for that crab.
Believe it or not, I can’t have sashimi. I have tried. 😆Maybe the trip to Hokkaido is what I need.
I can imagine how fresh those vegetables are. I even enjoy the vegetables in our area. They're so good.

Ok that should be on my bucket list of things to try, whenever in Japan.

Definitely, if you like seafood, Hokkaido is the seafood capital of the world in my humble opinion.

I love seafood... So that won't be a problem haha.
