There are places that give us nostalgia. For me, there’s this palabok place in Sta. Ana Manila where my Lola Aunt used to take me. Ever since then, it became my favorite palabok place.

Palabok is a Filipino noodle dish with rich pork and shrimp sauce. It is a popular merienda and can be found in most Filipino-themed restaurants. This savory noodle dish is topped with fish flakes, chicharron, and egg.

Every time I would eat palabok someplace else I would always remember the one in Sta. Ana. Oh, I wish I was eating noodles there instead.

Fortunately, even though it was 23 kilometers from my home at the time. I was able to return to the location after three years. I gushed about this location to someone special. She once went with me there, and when we had the opportunity, she chose to go there instead of eating at a restaurant.

I missed taking the jeepney. The jeepney we rode followed a route that I was very familiar with during my childhood. It made me reminisce about my school days haha. Like a child, I pointed out some memorable sites to my date.

Pamilihang Bayan ng Sta. Ana

I was enthusiastic and excited to come back to this place. Usually, in public wet markets, you’ll find a spot where karinderya food vendors are lined side by side.

In Sta. Ana market you’ll find one too but here there is high competition and the product? — Palabok.

The Best Palabok in Sta. Ana Manila

Meckie's Palabok & Halo Halo

I pass through the first 3 stalls, the tinderas waving at you telling you "Kain teeeh". I ignore these ates and went straight to my favorite palabok stall-- Meckie's Palabok and Halo- Halo.

Here, you can see the Palabok toppings and noodles encased in glass. From left to right, they have smoked fish flakes (tinapa flakes), crushed chicharron (pork rinds), err I'm not sure but I think the yellow one is toiny pieces of tokwa(tofu), tampalen chicharron(I think this is pork fat from the belly), yellow egg noodles, and vermicelli noodles.

I sat down and ordered my usual. You can choose to order Halo or not. When you say halo, your noodles will be a mix of yellow egg noodles and vermicelli. I opted for just vermicelli noodles because I like the thinness and how the sauce just wraps itself around it.

A single serving of palabok is 55php or a dollar. Served in 5-10 minutes. They boil your noodles then ladle them with an orange-y sauce colored by atsuete. They then put in all of the toppings available. You can also order some puto or lumpia to enjoy with your noodles.

When I received my plate of palabok, I cannot help but just glance at my date and give her a "touching" look.

You can choose to add more condiments to your noodles like fish sauce, pepper or chili powder. I can enjoy it as is but adding a squeeze of calamansi just wraps it up altogether. Give it a good mix and enjoy.

Sigh. I miss it already.

For that first bite, put a little bit of everything. Awesome is an understatement. It definitely seemed like every mouthful I took only made me feel hungrier. The sauce was flavorful and had the right amount of saltiness and the umami? It's just savory deliciousness.

After finishing a plate, I had to order another one and shared it with my date because she opted for half a serving. I just wanted to eat my fill because I knew it will take some time for me to come back to this place. Meckie's Palabok and Halo- Halo Eatery doesn't really disappoint. I hope I can bring someone else there soon and have a nice plate of palabok.

Halo-Halo

It was warm that day so we also decided to share a serving of halo-halo which is a shaved ice-type dessert with sweetened ingredients like white beans, banana, sweet potato, jelly, and nata. Topped with flan, purple yam, and milk.

Halo-Halo ingredients enclosed in glass

Meckie's Halo-Halo had purple yam, leche flan, macapuno, pinipig, nata, banana, gulaman, and white beans. I found their display giving off pinoy retro vibes esp those uniquely shaped serving glass.

A single serving of Halo-Halo is also 55Php. The ice wasn't very fine unlike those in restaurants. They're like very tiny pebbles which made it last longer on that warm day. My date also liked this type of ice because she liked chewing them. RIP teeth.

Having Halo-Halo after that delectable meal was refreshing. I don't know what makes a Halo-Halo stand above others but this one was just a regular one. Enjoyable but has no redeeming features but would I have it again? Yes, after a plate of palabok again haha.

I am glad that my lola aunt took me to this place. It will always have a special place in my heart and no matter what other people say that this or that is the best. Meckie's palabok is a simple treat that reminds me of simple times. This simple no-frills palabok eatery is pure bliss.

What are some simple treats you enjoy that just bring you back to your childhood?

Nakaka gutom naman.. Love ko din palabok meron din sa davao na palagi ko binabalikan with my bestfriend naga kain kami don.. 🥹 dalhin moko dito carl ~ charot

Gotchu Fam! basta dalhin mo muna sarili mo dito hahaha

Ganitong oras ko talaga binabasa ang mga ganitong pa post. WOW as in wow! Nag stayed ako sa Manila before but never had the chance to eat Palabok sa palengke dyan.

Gusto ko yung maraming chicharon kahit wala na tinapa, and then the sauce kaunti lang.

😤 Pero yeah I've yet to encounter a place or city na specialty ay Halo-halo.

Lika na balik na dito tp haha

If time permits! Hirap mag byahe ng may baby pa. Plan namin ni wife maglibot sa Makati muna hahah.

Totoo to! I somehow enjoy naman pero iba parin eh. Yung sabaw nya is yung pinakuluang karne na pinanggagarnish sa palabok. Walang hipon kasi dun.

The collab that will never happen.

May Benz Halo-halo dito sa amin pero di ko pa na ta try may mga specialty sila like salted egg halo-halo.

Reading this at six in the morning makes me want to eat Palabok right now. 🥹🥲
I love Palabok too! I haven't eaten one besides in Jollibee and Mang Inasal. It looks yummy and very saucy pa - my type. Not to mention na it's cheap.

Palabok has to be saucy talaga for me! Mang Inasal’s is not bad ah. I’d settle for it if I was craving for some 🥹

Dang~ Heaven! 😭 Palabok is my favorite talaga~ screw pancit canton! hahaha!

I tot the yellow sauce was the egg yolk. Nako, it is asuete all along lang pala!

Hmm, nagutom ako. I might buy sa Mang Inasal or Jabeee later haha! But nothing beats the palaboks in palengke.

!PIZZA

Truuue! I love my noodles and pansit pero palabok talaga is something that makes me drool every time I see a very sexy saucy one 😂
