Nasi liwet is a traditional rice dish that’s quite popular in Indonesia. It’s usually served with a variety of side dishes, and interestingly, it’s often eaten together during special occasions. This time, I decided to try making it myself at home—a simple version, of course. The process is very easy and quick using a rice cooker.

The ingredients are also quite simple, relying mainly on trri medan and a few other complementary ingredients. As someone who loves cooking, this certainly isn’t the first time I’ve made this liwet rice. I’ve often made it at home before to enjoy with my family.
The portion I made is enough for 2 or more servings. The result is quite a lot, but I intentionally made two servings because there are only two of us at home—my husband and me. So we want to enjoy the nasi liwet together for dinner later.
Ingredients

50 grams of Medan anchovies
3 red chili peppers
6 bird’s eye chili peppers
2 cloves of red onion
3 cloves of garlic
300 ml of water
½ teaspoon of salt
Cooking Procedure
Rinse the rice until clean, add the water that has been brought to a boil, and add the kaffir lime leaves, bay leaves, and lemongrass.

Once the onions and chili peppers are cooked, add them to the rice you prepared earlier.

Then fry the anchovies until they’re crispy and turn a golden brown. Add them to the rice, and don’t forget to add salt.

Next, cook in a rice cooker until done. Just imagine how fragrant it will be—the aroma will surely fill the kitchen.

Result

Serve it with a fried egg or any kind of fish, add some crackers and sambal—it’s absolutely amazing. A classic dish with an extraordinary flavor—such an authentic taste. The savory blend with the unique flavor of Medan anchovies makes this rice dish a perfect match for my palate.

I highly recommend this liwet rice as a signature dish—it’s a truly unique option for entertaining guests. Even served simply with fish or fried eggs, it’s already fantastic; enjoy it with other delicious dishes, and the result is sure to be just as delicious.
