Tamales have gone global!

With their long history and deep cultural roots, they've captured hearts and taste buds across continents. While they're still a top favorite in Latin American countries like Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Colombia, their deliciousness has spread far and wide.

Tamales are pretty popular in the U.S.

So, what’s a tamale all about? It starts with masa dough, which is like a soft, doughy base. Inside, you'll find all sorts of tasty fillings like pork, chicken, beef, cheese, or beans. Traditionally, they’re wrapped up in a plantain leaf or corn husk and steamed to perfection. You might see them served straight out of the leaf or plated up. Either way, they’re delicious!

I picked up half a dozen tamales

for $20 to help raise funds for the new church we're building. Not only did I get some tasty tamales, but I also got to support a great cause in the process.

It's a win-win

Enjoying delicious food and knowing that my contribution is helping our community come together to create a meaningful space... it is all worth it!

Tamales have a cool history

Tamales goes way back to Mesoamerica, which is the region from central Mexico all the way to northern Costa Rica. The indigenous people who lived there are the ones who started making tamales, and they might date back to as early as 7000 BC!

The dough used in tamales, called masa.

Masa is made from ground maize, or corn. For these ancient cultures, maize wasn’t just food— it was a big deal and a part of their celebrations. They often used tamales and other maize-based offerings in their religious ceremonies, showing just how important maize was to their lives.

As the Spanish arrived and brought European influence to North and Central America

Tamales started to spread too. The Spanish got a taste for tamales in indigenous communities of Mesoamerica and took them along as they moved into North America.

Along with colonization came Catholicism

Tamales became linked to major Catholic holidays. That’s why in many Latino families, tamales are now a cherished Christmas tradition!

Spreading the tamale love

By the 1870s, tamale carts had become quite common on the streets of Los Angeles, spreading the tamale love far and wide. Meanwhile, in Mississippi, some communities took the traditional tamale recipe and added their own delicious twist. They started frying tamales and spicing them up with hot peppers for an extra kick.

Fast forward to today

Tamales have evolved into countless variations and are savored by people around the globe. From classic recipes passed down through generations to innovative new takes, the tamale continues to be a beloved culinary delight.
