Bagging Some More Marion Blackberries

Two years ago I cut our Marion Blackberry bush down to the ground. Last year we saw a lot of growth but no berries. This year… well it’s overloaded with berries!! Every couple of days I go out and pick berries. These big berries are pretty tart unless you wait for them to basically fall off the vines when you touch them. Give them a very gentle tug and if the berry doesn’t come off easily, it isn’t ripe.

Last week I waited a few extra days before I went picking those giant Marion blackberries. I pick them, rinse them off, then lay them out on a cookie sheet and freeze them. Well this time it was 2 cookie sheets, one big and one small.

Out of pure curiosity I wanted to know how many pounds of berries I picked that day. After clearing the big cookie sheet of berries, I wasn’t sure if the berries on the smaller cookie sheet would fit in a gallon size zip-loc bag

Well… they fit but you could not zip the bag closed. I even had to shake the bag to pack the berries down so they would all fit.

Time for the Weigh In…

Dang!! Almost 5lbs!

The berries won’t last long just being in the freezer in zip-loc bags. I wait until I have a few bags saved up, then I vacuum seal them. Before I start vacuum sealing them, let’s see how many pounds of berries have been picked from this one bush so far this year.

3lbs 11.5 ounces

1lb 9.2 ounces

Those were bags that I already had in the freezer. We have made a few smoothies with them, so I bet we have used a pound or so of berries doing that.

13lbs 6.75 ounces
and there are still a ton more to waiting to ripen

This is just one corner of the bush. All the other sides look the same. What the hell am I gonna do with all these berries!!! Maybe we will try our hand at some blackberry jam, syrup, or maybe go crazy and try making some Blackberry wine. I’m not a wine person by any means but blackberry wine does sound pretty tasty.

Time to go pick some more blackberries…

You know blackberries have lots of benefits. I remember when my child found it hard to poop, a blackberry juice was recommended. When I saw your pictures it seems that I wanted to harvest some as well. hahaha

Oh! You have a lot of blackberries! They are so big and look yummy. ;)
