Greek Gyros

In this post, I would like to talk to you about the most famous Greek street food. It is so famous that we are exporting it to other countries around the world. Everywhere I have visited, you can find one Greek street food that has some iconic elements like Zorba's Greek gyros or souvlaki.

Now, I find it ridiculous for Greece to open these kinds of street food places and give them names and architecture resembling the Parthenon. We are more than that.

Back to gyros: what inspired me to write this post is my love for eating gyros. I believe it is one of the best Greek foods ever invented. Of course, it takes a lot of influences from other countries like the Turkish doner, but the original Greek gyros is pork meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie, then sliced and served wrapped or stuffed in pita with fried potatoes, onion, and tzatziki. Later, other ingredients were added like mustard and ketchup. Each city has its own variations and makes it a bit different.

In Athens, it is called souvlaki gyro, though I'm not really sure why. Here in Northern Greece, we call it gyros because of the way the meat is cooked – it is always turning to achieve this awesome cooking.

In recent years, the quality of the meat has declined because owners want to sell more at lower prices, so they buy meat that is heavily spiced to mask the bad taste. However, in my area, there is one place that still continues to make it with fresh pork meat. They offer smaller portions, but if you ever try this one, you will understand the difference each time you taste it.

I belive many of you whi have visited Greece would have tasted gyros what was your impression?

So basically the main ingredient is beef, or pork then potatoes over wrapped bread?

It’s pork tzatziki sauce wrapped with pita bread

OH SNAP! That looks damn good I can't remember the last time I had a good gyro! I'll be honest I didn't know it originated in Greece

It's our national street food 😂
