TacoCat's TrEats #159: Healthy Yummy Tofu Bowl! 😋

image.png

Hey Hive!

Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again but obviously you have to be vaccinated. But since there aren't any restrictions this allows us to try out different food places again!

It's been a while but we're back with more of our hawker adventures - trying out different stalls in different hawker centers to find which are our favourites!

image.png

If you've never patronised a hawker center before, they are typically non-air conditioned buildings that house all kinds of food stalls specialising in one or two signature dishes. They're ubiquitous here in Singapore and Malaysia and are known for delicious and affordable food - the perfect combination!

They're one of our favourite places to get food and we're always on the lookout to try different hawker stalls and centres! So the other day we were in the far east of Singapore and decided to try this new one we saw called Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre!

image.png

I would say there are two kinds of hawker centers in Singapore - the new generation and old generation of hawker centers. Older gen centers tend to be smaller, compact and more cramped since they were built many decades ago and contain stalls borne from streetcart stalls of old.

image.png

But the new gen hawker centers are more spacious, open and well-ventilated. Their stalls also tend to be more "progressive" in a way, with more fusion cuisines and dishes that cater to more of the young and "hipster" crowd.

image.png

Nowadays, you'd find a balance between old and new hawker centers in Singapore, and although I would say the older gen ones tend to have "better" food, I like hanging out in the newer ones just because it's a lot more comfortable with the huge ceiling fans and space.

The designs are also really nice, especially this particular one in Pasir Ris, with all the colourful signs and the way they marry old and new styles.

image.png

This one is by Foodfare, a big Food Services business unit in Singapore that aims to help moderate prices of cooked food at food courts in malls, coffee shops and hawker centres. They also make it mandatory for stalls to offer both budget and healthy options on all their menus!

image.png

Because it was late in the afternoon on a weekday we didn't really have a lot of options as most of the stalls were closed. But we did find one that looked intriguing! It's this stall called Tasty Street!

image.png

They looked like they specialise in these healthy rice bowls with chicken or beef, tofu and various vegetables. It looked pretty good and seemed like a nice balanced meal so we decided to give it a try!

image.png

It was kinda pricey though so we decided on one of their budget options - the Deep Fried Tofu bowl which includes Truffle Hotplate Tofu sauce, Brown and Pearl Rice, Daily Greens and an Onsen Egg!

image.png

It didn't look like a big bowl regardless but thankfully we weren't that hungry and just needed a snack. The stall even had instructions on how to enjoy the rice bowl which were 1) Break the Egg, 2) Mix Everything, 3) ENJOY!

image.png

The daily greens were some stir-fried red and green cabbage and the rice had a unique taste; not that different from white rice but since it had brown rice it definitely tasted healthier for sure! The tofu wasn't deep fried though like we thought, more like stir fried as well but the sauce was still nice and tasty.

image.png

Overall, I'd say it was definitely a nice and healthy meal. But it definitely left me wanting more especially since we shared the one bowl. I think if I had eaten it by myself it would be satisfying but maybe still insufficient. Either way, it was a good snack for sure, and I like that it was healthy too with all the vegetables.

image.png

I don't really remember why we traveled all that way but I know we somehow stumbled upon that hawker center while looking for food nearby. Either way, I'm glad we ended up there and managed to get some food since it was mid-afternoon. It seems like a good hangout spot and popular with students in the area and there are even multiple floors! I'm sure there are plenty more exciting stalls to try in the evening so if you're in the area go check it out with some friends if you can!
