Schon öfter spielte ich mit dem Gedanken, aus den Agaven oben am Ententeich mal einen Tequila zu brennen.
Zwar ist die Sorte die hier gedeiht nicht die aus dem das Original entsteht, aber ich denke mal eine gut gebrannte Kopie muss ja nicht zwingend schlechter sein.
Several times I played with the idea to distill a tequila from the agaves up at the duck pond.
The variety that grows here is not the original, but I think a good copy does not necessarily have to be worse.
Irgendwie erinnern mich die frischen Triebe, die in Rekordgeschwindigkeit wachsen, an gigantischen Spargel und als ich dann noch las das die Agaven tatsächlich zu den Spargel Gewächsen gehören staunte ich nicht schlecht, aber die Lust daraus Schnaps zu brennen verflog im Nu.
Allein der Gedanke an Spargel Schnaps, lässt mich würgen.
Man muss ja auch nicht alles durch die Destille jagen und nötig ist es auch nicht, gibt es doch durchaus attraktivere Brände zu verkosten, wie zum Beispiel dieses kleine Wunder.
Somehow the fresh shoots, which grow at record speed, remind me of gigantic asparagus and when I read that the agaves belong to the asparagus plants, I was amazed, but the desire to distill schnapps flew away in an instant.
Just the thought of asparagus schnapps, makes me gag.
You do not have to chase everything through the distillery and it is not necessary, but there are more attractive spirits to taste, such as this little miracle.
Diese Birne wächst hier nicht, vielmehr fand sie den Weg über eine Postsendung aus Brandenburg ins ferne Portugal und am Absender erkannte ich wem ich dieses Früchtchen zu verdanken hatte.
Das von mir sehr geschätzte Großmaul @leroy.linientreu bestand darauf, sich für meine kleine Medronho Probe zu revanchieren und überraschte mich mit diesem lokalen Tröpfchen aus seiner Gegend.
This pear does not grow here, rather it found its way via a postal consignment from Brandenburg to faraway Portugal, and from the sender, I recognized who I had to thank for this little fruit.
The big mouth @leroy.linientreu, who I hold in high esteem, insisted on returning the favor for my little Medronho sample and surprised me with this local droplet from his region.
Da ich nicht gerne alleine trinke, involvierte ich den Schweizer Nachbarn mit zur Verkostung, der sich sichtlich darüber freute, behauptet er doch von sich ein Kenner der Obstbrände zu sein.
Es wurde nicht lange gefackelt und eingeschenkt, vorsichtshalber in die eigentlich für Medronho gedachten Mini Gläser.
Since I don't like to drink alone, I involved my Swiss neighbor in the tasting, who was visibly pleased, claiming to be a connoisseur of fruit brandies.
It was not long waited and poured, as a precaution in the mini glasses intended for Medronho.

Mein Gegenüber, der Experte, nickte wohlwollend.
Ich grinste zufrieden.
Ein reiner, feiner Tropfen diese Birne.
Zwar verwies der Brennmeister dieses sauberen, fruchtigen Leckerlies darauf, das der Brand noch sehr frisch sei und sein volles Aroma erst im Laufe der nächsten zwei Jahre entfalte, das hielt uns aber nicht davon ab gleich nochmal nachzuschenken.
Der zweite schmeckte noch besser als der Erste, denn jetzt hatten sich die Geschmacksknospen im Munde auf ihn eingestellt, waren sie beim ersten Gläschen noch etwas verunsichert, wegen des fehlenden, vom Medronho gewohnten Brennen im Hals.

In Anbetracht der winzigen Gläser und der Weisheit das aller guten Dinge drei sind, gab es noch ein Schlückchen hinterher und anschließend fand die Flasche einen Ehrenplatz im Schnapsregal, wo sie erst mal sicher steht, auch wenn klare Gewissheit darüber besteht, das sie dort keine zwei Jahre überleben wird.
Considering the tiny glasses and the wisdom that all good things come in threes, there was still a sip afterward and then the bottle found a place of honor on the liquor shelf, where it is safe for now, even if there is clear certainty that it will not survive there for two years.

Weniger an Hochprozentigen, vielmehr an eine gut gereifte Esel Salami, muss ich beim Anblick meiner neuen Nachbarn denken, aber das ist eine andere Geschichte.
Less to high-proof, rather to a well-matured donkey salami, I must think with the sight of my new neighbors, but that is another history.
