Adapting TV shows for specific national or regional markets is practice not limited to Netflix and it was actually quite common in pre-streaming era. For example, All in the Family, one of the most popular 1970s sitcoms in USA, was adaptation of BBC original. Homeland began as Israeli TV series Hatufim (Prisoners) and was also remade in Russia and India.
