Oz The Great and Powerful review (spa/eng)

Oscar Diggs, un Mago cirquero de dudosa reputación, es transportado desde Kansas hasta el mágico mundo de Oz, lo que le hace creer que la fama y la fortuna llegarán de inmediato. Pero todo se complica cuando las brujas Theodora, Evanora y Glinda dudan de sus capacidades como mago, si quiere lograr sus metas deberá descubrir en quién debe confiar.

Luego de haber visto Wicked recordé que ya había visto otra precuela hace ya un tiempo llamada Oz el Poderoso, tal vez no sea igual de profunda que Wicked pero no necesita serlo, es divertida, emotiva y graciosa, aunque tiene sus defectos es muy recomendable.

Vemos a el mago Oscar Diggs que principalmente estafa a la gente con sus funciones haciendo creer que tiene poderes, enamora a jóvenes ingenuas, lo más cercano que tiene a un amigo es su asistente y no lo valora como debería, además siente algo por un amor perdido, una mujer llamada Annie, vemos como Oscar o como se hace llamar Oz quiere ser un hombre tan famoso como Thomas Eddison, él quiere ser un gran hombre y no solo uno bueno.

La historia tiene varios giros, ninguno muy sorprendente pero funciona para la trama, no se nos presenta mucha profundidad ya que al ser una precuela del Mago de Oz ya sabemos cómo terminará todo. Eso no quiere decir que no sea una buena película, ya que es dirigida por Sam Raimi quien coloca su humor y estilo aprovechándolos en el guion, en combinación con las excelentes interpretaciones de los actores que logran darnos personajes muy carismáticos.

Los efectos especiales son maravillosos al darle vida a un mundo colorido, extraño, atrayente y cautivadora, dándonos una de las mejores aperturas en una historia de fantasía haciendo un paralelismo con el filme original, el clásico de 1939 pasaba del sepia al color cuando Dorothy llega a Oz, aquí pasa del blanco y negro al color cuando Oscar llega a Oz, esos detalles hacen tan llamativa a la película.

El acto final es muy bueno combinando la narrativa y los efectos especiales, la mitad de la cinta es un tanto predecible eso no le resta calidad visual ni narrativa, aprovechan muy bien las referencias tanto a los libros como a la película de 1939, también aplican el truco de actores que hacen personajes en Kansas y también personajes de Oz haciendo que el protagonista conecte con ellos como una manera de redimirse por sus errores pasados, la historia es sencilla, un buen sentido del humor, un excelente comienzo y un maravilloso final, aprovechando muy bien efectos especiales y efectos prácticos.

Hoy en día es difícil impresionarse con las películas, son pocas las que logran maravillas con sus efectos, algunos piensan que saber cómo se hace un truco le resta impacto, pero yo pienso que saber el proceso lo hace todavía más increíble, todos esos detalles le dan más peso a una película, el esfuerzo en darnos una historia que disfruten niños, jóvenes y adultos por igual, es lo que diferencia a una simple película de una buena película.

Oscar Diggs, a circus magician of dubious reputation, is transported from Kansas to the magical world of Oz, which makes him believe that fame and fortune will come immediately. But everything gets complicated when the witches Theodora, Evanora and Glinda doubt his abilities as a magician, if he wants to achieve his goals he must find out who he should trust.

After having seen Wicked I remembered that I had already seen another prequel some time ago called Oz the Mighty, it may not be as deep as Wicked but it doesn't need to be, it is fun, emotional and funny, although it has its flaws it is highly recommended.

We see the magician Oscar Diggs who mainly swindles people with his performances into believing he has powers, he falls in love with naive young girls, the closest thing he has to a friend is his assistant and he doesn't value him as he should, he also has feelings for a lost love, a woman named Annie, we see how Oscar or as he calls himself Oz wants to be a man as famous as Thomas Eddison, he wants to be a great man and not just a good one.

The story has several twists, none too surprising but it works for the plot, we are not presented with much depth as being a prequel to the Wizard of Oz we already know how it will all end. That does not mean that it is not a good movie, since it is directed by Sam Raimi who puts his humor and style to good use in the script, in combination with the excellent performances of the actors who manage to give us very charismatic characters.

The special effects are wonderful in bringing to life a colorful, strange, engaging and captivating world, giving us one of the best openings in a fantasy story, paralleling the original film, the 1939 classic went from sepia to color when Dorothy arrives in Oz, here it goes from black and white to color when Oscar arrives in Oz, those details make the film so striking.

The final act is very good combining narrative and special effects, half of the film is somewhat predictable but that does not detract from the visual quality not narrative, they make good use of references to both the books and the 1939 film, they also apply the trick of actors playing characters in Kansas and also characters from Oz making the protagonist connect with them as a way to redeem himself for his past mistakes, the story is simple, a good sense of humor, an excellent beginning and a wonderful ending, making good use of special effects and practical effects.

Nowadays it is difficult to be impressed with movies, there are few that achieve wonders with their effects, some people think that knowing how a trick is done detracts from its impact, but I think that knowing the process makes it even more incredible, all those details give more weight to a movie, the effort in giving us a story that children, young and adults alike enjoy, is what differentiates a simple movie from a good movie.
