Weapons is everything good they say about it

Weapons is one of the most interesting horror films I've seen in a long time, and compared to modern classics like Longlegs, Get Out, and Hereditary, it's a solid addition to the modern landscape, one that proves that in a sea of reboots and forced sequels, there's still room for original ideas.

I knew it had potential ever since I heard the infamous news that Jordan Peele had fired his manager for failing to acquire the film rights in a bidding war, something that doesn't surprise me considering the film's premise, loosely inspired by the works of Stephen King.

*In Weapons, we followed the mysterious disappearance of 17 children, who ran out of their homes in the middle of the night in sync.

All the children were part of Teacher Justine's class, and the only one who was part of the classroom and didn't disappear was Alex, who is obviously quite disturbed by the situation.

As expected, the entire town begins to doubt Justine, unleashing her paranoia and beginning a desperate search to understand what really happened.

Weapons is built around an interesting idea, and for most of its footage, it manages to develop it appropriately. It's slow, but it organically provides information to the viewer to keep them engaged.

We see how events unfold from different perspectives, a gimmick that wasn't necessary but at the same time makes the narrative beats fit more elegantly.

Starring the excellent Julia Gardner (whom, by the way, I met thanks to Ozark a few years ago), Weapons is a film that doesn't need forced jump scares to keep our attention, and that knows how to handle its most violent moments so that they have the appropriate impact.

The resolution of the central mystery isn't anything out of this world, but the way it's presented audiovisually is what makes it effective. It's a very well-directed film, and the performances of the entire cast support it very well.
