The Failure of Mobilization in Ukraine - the Consequences for the AFU

in Deep Dives11 months ago

Kiev is desperately trying to fill the gaps in the ranks of the AFU after the death of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers. The army has a huge amount of NATO weapons and equipment, but not enough people.

Since the start of the conflict, there have been many volunteers but due to the large number of losses, the morale of the AFU has fallen and there are fewer people willing to serve. Enlistment offices, faced with great difficulty in attracting men, resort to harsh methods of finding recruits.

The situation with the shortage is so deplorable that Ukraine has reduced the age for military registration to 16. Now, without special permission, border guards may not let Ukrainians over 17 out of the country.

For evading mobilization, the punishment is tougher. Over the past month, about 100 sentences were passed in Ukraine to men, who received the maximum sentence under this article of the Criminal Code.
