We have a lot of issues as humans. Our biggest issue these days is that we are soft and lazy. We want someone to tell us what to do because we are soft and lazy. Most of us live in comfortable houses with internet and games and we are quickly addicted to the comfort and ease of life allowed us. Even most "poor" people live far better than the most elite of times past.
I also wonder if the majority of our change in mentality is a marketing problem. I'm a 1974 model and I remember a stark difference in how people thought back then. Being offended by something was something to be ashamed of and fighting our own battles was how we got along.
There were plenty of other problems and I thing the belief in the State was actually much stronger back then. We had maybe three sources of "news" (propaganda even then) and people had actual faith in the media and our other establishments like healthcare and justice and so on.
The great change now is that everyone has a media powerhouse in their pocket and the sycophants have no where to hide anymore. A great awakening has been happening and now we can turn toward open source and decentralized tools (and each other) and build solutions to out competed the State.
Cognitive dissonance is still a major problem, but look at what is happening. We have a self proclaimed Anarchy-Captialist as president of some South American nation (Venezuela?).
