When justification may not be just: Ecotrain QOTW 10.7

You've heard it said that one man's trash is another man's treasure. Good luck finding the source of that quote, because I looked. Seems that it was in a publication back in the 1600's, but even then, it was paraphrased.

That's not really the first thought I had when thinking of this QOTW, but if you really think about it - it does apply!

What's important to me, is not necessarily important to you.

My protest might be the source of your problems, and your protest might be the source of mine. We all come from different backgrounds, cultures, worldviews, privilege, financial status, religions, etc. You may feel completely passionate about something that means absolutely nothing to me.

Why should that bother me?

f you are professing your right to stand up for something you believe in - why should I stand in your way? Why should I prevent you from that expression? Shouldn't we all be respectful and admire the integrity and courage from protesters attempting to make change?

source

Here is where the problem may come in:When your justification isn't justified in my eyes.

Then, the question becomes ,"Who is right?", "What is best for society?" "Who makes that call?"

This is the basis of every single conflict, every single fight, and every single war. Both parties believe that they're in the right, and neither will back down for one another.

@samsmith1971 and I were talking about the Golden Rule today. I mentioned that if we truly put the needs of others before our own, and loved each other as much as we loved ourselves, we would be living in Utopia.

But we clearly don't live in Utopia - far from it, actually. Our collective protests are rarely about the good of community as a whole, but rather, our own agenda disguised hidden behind the right, politically correct banner. If we need to tread on others, in order to push our own preference - so be it.

source

Is it justified?

I guess it will always come down to who you ask. There are victims on every side, tragedies and travesties on every level. But I truly believe the only answer that solves these conflicts - lies in the simplest stance of all:

Love and value one another as much as (or even more than) you love and value yourself. (paraphrase of the Golden Rule.)

This was an entry for @ecotrain's QOTW, led by @eco-alex. This was the final week of collaboration between DreemPort and @ecotrain! Hope that all you dreemers enjoyed visiting these challenging questions each week!

It is GOLDEN and, of course you are right. If we could get the general public on board, or world leaders (in particular) we would be living in utopia. This would be your view because you’re DREEMS, the quintessential all-loving DREEMS. I think we have to protest to let everyone know that they have to love and respect one another. The KEY protest, which will end all protest.
Hugs and kisses and luvs.

___MAKING ME CRY. NOW WHERE WOULD A POST LIKE THIS MAKE ME CRY _ because you ACTUALLY mean it! AND live your life accordingly.
I wish I could walk in your shadow

You have rightly spoken, this is the cause of every problem both in relationships, as you stated includes religion, wars, and also in politics etc.. my opinions and views may be different from what others see, but that does not simply mean either of us may be right or wrong. The majority that supports the other causes the opponent to be offended and wars and hatred spring up. When it comes to views and opinions we all have our different choices to make and we should learn to accept and not get offended. Thanks for sharing.

thanks for visiting!

yes...as I mentioned in another comment.. moving towards a world of peace and compassion and joy and love.....

it would ultimately require compromise..and most likely sacrifice.

and we have very few people left in the world who would truly sacrifice for another.

seems we are eventually doomed without people like that ..

Ah! I am happy to read this piece from you and glad you finally wrote it hahaha. From your point of view I truly agree with you but then, won't it be better to take the right channel before we express ourselves and protest for what we believe in?. I remembered a protest I got stuck in while I was in college, I didn't really know what was going but I all I saw was people getting stepped on. It was a gruesome stampede and I didn't know how I made it out alive. Since then, college authorities gave out a rule to be followed if any protest was to be organized.

@samsmith1971 and I were talking about the Golden Rule today. I mentioned that if we truly put the needs of others before our own, and loved each other as much as we loved ourselves, we would be living in Utopia.

I daydream about this everyday wishing if it can really and the world would be a better place for everyone but I don't think that is happening anytime soon. Now it is survival for the fittest.

Enjoyed reading your post☺️☺️. Now, it is me that is left😒😩. Thank you for participating in the QOTW! We hope to see you next week 😊

thank-you-esther.png

hehehehe hope to stay with QOTW! even after DreemPort shines the light on a new community...I really enjoyed these questions!!!

and yes I agree...the stand we take first must be right.

but again... that is all about the golden rule

if the stance you take always puts others first.... then everything shifts to the good of someone else before your own!

hehehe impossible here. I think....

but someday, all will be made new and right ❤️

A deeper question this week..

loved each other as much as we loved ourselves, we would be living in Utopia.

There are still.many out there who can't love others,. Not even themselves ..
But if love only prevails in this world, I guess, it will be a better place..

one day...I believe it will

until then, we suffer with the opposite of love

indifference and entitled selfishness!

but we can look to the hope of a new day ❤️

good morning to you Jane!

There is nothing like utopia in this world. We have to live perfectly with our imperfections and so we have everything to defend our stance.

By respecting others point of views we create a world of harmony but what about a situation where when there is a conflict of interest among group. When the life of one would become the death of the other, one has to choose what is right for one own self. I wonder if the right or wrong really exist....🤔

I believe right and wrong absolutely does exist. God holds the standard of right and wrong, but wr have gone so far from His standard that everything has become muddled more and more ..tangled to the point where we've created no-win situations.

I think it requires sacrifice now ..in order to return to a place where people are restored.

but... that will take a special kind of community....to knowingly sacrifice their preferences and rights ...so that others can benefit.

and perhaps they won't even receive their own benefit.

how many people do you know in the world like that? hehehe

not very many

even those who do "good" for others...many of them see it as an investment in their own future! it really giving.... but just giving temporarily until they can receive (with interest!)

hahahaha you see I have a very jaded outlook when it comes to the good of man. lol

not very many

Yeah, not very many.

God has guided us about right and wrong but haven't we seen the situations where people have conflicts about what God has guided?
Everyone has his own sets of right guided by God

I love the quote you started with and yes, I also looked for I and I guess it´s Yotam Ottolenghi that quotes it, if I am not wrong, or was it paraphrased as you said?

We all have different problems and your way of solving them might be different from mine. If you think going the wrong way solving yours not minding if it hurts another person is the way out, then you haven´t practised the golden rule.

yes ..hehhee I saw that author too..but then I saw another use of the phrase 100 years before .. so I was like hmmmm?

some of these phrases..we've been saying then so long ..we can't trace their origin hehehe

and yes... exactly...if we actually made decisions based on the Golden Rule ..if everyone did...

my gosh. what a world we would have!!!! hehee

Yes, many quotes but cannot trace their origins. The world would be super satisfying to live in

its a tough one huh! i also really struggled to make my mind up.. but at the end of the day.. i mean.. there are more important issues in this world than getting to work on time or going shopping right!

i love your conclusion.. that makes everything so much more simple! <3

good morning @eco-alex! hehehe

yes - so simple - and yet so hard to implement right???

usually the best things always are that conundrum! hahaha once someone takes a step in the right direction - its much easier for others to follow.

but it only takes one corrupt person pushing in the opposite direction to ruin it all and start us all back on square one! LOL

terrible how it goes like that! hehehehe

Thought provoking!

It's true... love should be our guiding light no matter what the choice/decision at hand. But people will always differ in their opinions/views on whether the ends justify the means, and to what extent one may go in the name of any given cause. So, one person may still say that their chosen course of action is being done out of love for humanity, even though another sees immediate harm in the action and does not believe that the protest action in itself is very loving and therefore lacks justification in their eyes. This is such a subjective issue. I personally think it comes down to whether the protest action in question has a reasonable chance of success, within the existing political environment, of bringing about a sufficient meeting of the minds to expedite or move significantly towards real change. Protest action that does more harm than the healing it achieves is not justifiable in my books. This response forms part of my own response to QOTW :-) !ALIVE !PIZZA !LADY

I agree with your position. For me, this qotw has an intrinsic duality that bounces with the ego enthroned on both sides and in my publication: "Two wolves",I try to outline this idea.
Best regards, @dreemport!🙃

Who is right?"

The case of right and wrong sometimes always seems to be a question that demands a relative answer depending on the values the person answering upholds most times.
At a point, we all feel we are all right and if given an audience will give legit reasons why we think so.

Love and value one another as much as (or even more than) you love and value yourself

We may have different views on this anyway
For me, I believe if I love myself more, then, I can be able to extend the love to my neighbors because how can I give what I don't have yet?
The love I wish to give out, where is it coming from if I don't have it for myself yet

Beautiful post.
You write passionately 👍
