Our world has a population of 7.9 billion human beings, that is a lot of people! Most of our population is densely contained within cities with people living in cramped and seemingly overpopulated conditions. This is equal to around 50 people per km2 (129 per sq. mi.). Another way to understand our population density is to say that 95% of the world's population is concentrated on just 10% of the world's land. What this means is that claims of overpopulation are not related to the amount of land that we have available but more to do with other factors. Many of these factors relate to the resources we have, how we use them, and the way we deal with waste, reuse, and many other factors such as pollution and climate that all relate to the way that we live and the systems that govern us.
This Question Of The Week asks you whether you think our planet really is overpopulated, and whether we should be taking action to control our numbers, or whether we should be focussing on other factors that might mean we are able to continue to grown in numbers with out using up all our resources and causing untold negative effects that could pose an existential threat. If we are to continue as we are then it is clear that our planet may not be able to accommodate us, and one way or another we have to take action. This QOTW asks you whether you think the appropriate action we need to take is to change the way we do things, or to simply reduce the number of children that we have.
Your answer should include some ideas about how you think we should resolve this issue. If you believe we should reduce the number of children we have then how would you propose we do this? For example. should we enforce a blanket limit on all people, or should we allow certain people to have more children than others? What would the conditions or requirements be to allow some people to have more children than others? Perhaps those who live self sufficiently should be allowed to have more children, or those who demonstrate that they are living with a lower carbon footprint through appropriate choices in lifestyle might be given the right to have more? There is no right or wrong answer, but your opinion is valuable and of great interest.
Conversely, perhaps you think that there should be no limit placed on how many children we have, but instead you might propose significant changes to the way we operate our planet. What changes would you propose to reduce the impact we have on our environment? What are the issues that limit how many people we can sustain on planet earth. Do we have enough resources? Are we using our resources in the right way? What actually is the problem and why do you think that some say that there are too many people on the planet? The answer is not clear cut and we would love to hear what you think!
As always, please feel free to write and share about any aspect of overpopulation that you think is relevant. You may speak about politics, technology or any other concept that you feel can address this issue. It is fair to say, for example, that technology could be used to mitigate many of the issues that our large population is causing, and we would be very interested to hear ways in which you think technology could be used to solve many of our climate and population issues.

My answer is no we are not over populated. we just need to spread out more and become more responsible for our realm. An emphasis of raising consciousness is needed and that is exactly what is happening in the world right now. I don't know how long it will take but it is happening.
I just saw your view now about the topic and I like your comment. The world is not overpopulated, upon seas and mountain human can build houses but resources is what determines whether the cities have overcrowded the available resources. A family consisting of a parent and their two children can be said t be overpopulated if the resources are not sufficient for them. But the "WORLD" is never overpopulated.

That's true, we are over populated and we know how to tackle this problem. But I understand some of the suggestions I have in my mind would not be taken seriously for one or the other reasons. However, I am going to post them and see how people react to them. Thanks for bringing such a burning issue in this edition.

it seems like a dilemma until you realize that food is thrown away so that someone can turn a profit.
Its a distribution problem.
Well, capitalism is the profit business, right? And distribution is one of the tools of the operation of the capitalist system; so you can't have capitalism and equal share of the food in one pot! I'm neither against nor on the side of capitalism; but that's a broken system and it needs to be replaced or fixed somehow!

The world is most absolutely not "overpopulated" but, even if you don't agree, you still don't have to worry.
The rate of growth has stalled, meaning that our population keeps getting bigger, but at a slower rate.
The way things are going, we will topple off at almost 10 billion people, and then we will naturally slow down. Our numbers will keep falling until we reach a comfortable point.
This will happen naturally.
There are places that are "overpopulated" yes, but there are also many developed countries who are not sustaining their populations.
It is all about the relocation of people, somebody is gonna have to live in that abandoned (insert abandoned castle here).
An interesting conundrum we have here, because there are many factors influencing the problem.

I really liked the dynamics of this opportunity for reflection.
This is a question that all of us should start thinking about, if we already have not. If we reduce our population and yet continue to remain a very materialistic society, then we only pass on the same ideologies to our younger generations. And someday, sooner than later, we will start running out of natural resources.
